Social Excellence

People want to be around people who... A. Complain a lot? B. Always see a problem? C. Have lots of snark? D. Believe in innate human goodness and offer encouragemint, uplift, and hope in every interaction. E. Correct typos in tweets.

“Social” isn’t easy. Our social best is often weighed down by fear and insecurity and selfishness. But those are shadows. The shadows aren’t who we are. Nobody wishes they’d been more shy, more standoff-ish or more lonely at the end. We celebrate those who gathered with us.

A group of whales is called a pod. A group of crows is called a murder. A group of cows is called a herd. A group of humans is called a possibility. A group of inspired humans gathered around a shared cause is called a thing that’s about to make the world better.

Awkward encounters are just mismatched energy and intention. They’re not about you. They’re about that particular moment. Don’t expect every moment ever to line up perfectly and magically. Expect humans and time to be complex and some moments between us to be imperfect.

Study the differences closely. Focus on the smallness of them. You’ll find the pain we cause each other to be absurd and the beauty of everyone to be astounding.

Differences between humans are so minuscule if you back up and observe us from afar. Yet those tiny differences define us and divide us. They are the reason we separate and gather. They are the reason we fight and fall in love.

A blessing for your week. May you experience the wonder of another person’s truth. May they experience yours. May you see a new soul. May they see yours. May you join a cause that matters. May many join yours.
