Assassination of Sammy Mpatlanyane. Another Silenced Voice in Mpumalanga’s 2010 World Cup Tender Scandals. Samuel “Sammy” Mpatlanyane, aged 45 and serving as Head of Communications and spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation, was assassinated in the early hours of 8 January 2010 at his home in Stonehenge, Mbombela. Gunmen entered his residence without forced entry, shot him multiple times while he slept in his second-floor bedroom, firing bullets into the headboard and left him with fatal chest and ribcage wounds. His body was later found on the balcony. A police-issued firearm was discovered near the scene, and the security alarm was activated only after the shooting. No valuables were taken, indicating a targeted hit rather than a robbery. Mpatlanyane’s death occurred almost exactly one year after the assassination of Jimmy Mohlala, the Mbombela Local Municipality Speaker who was gunned down on 4 January 2009 outside his home in Kanyamazane. Mohlala had publicly exposed serious irregularities in the awarding of multimillion-rand tenders for the construction of the R1.2 billion Mbombela Stadium, a flagship venue for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He highlighted forged tax clearance certificates, irregular contracts, and misconduct involving municipal officials and the professional team linked to the project, including figures associated with Lefika Emerging Equity and Bobby Motaung. Mohlala was due to testify or lay charges when he was killed, in what many believe was a politically motivated silencing to protect lucrative tender interests. Provincial MEC for Sports and Culture, Vusi Shongwe, explicitly linked the two murders, stating that the same “scavengers” responsible for Mohlala’s death had killed Mpatlanyane. Both men were reportedly on an expanding “hit list” initially of 11 names and growing to around 20, targeting politicians, officials, and even journalists who opposed or exposed corruption tied to World Cup-related contracts in the province. Mpatlanyane had discovered that his own signature had been forged on documents authorising the release of millions of rands from his department’s budget. The questionable payments were connected to controversial tenders, notably a R20 million contract for the Mbombela 2010 fan park and funding for the musical production “Lion of the East” (intended to honour ANC activist Gert Sibande). He refused to overlook the irregularities or approve the irregular disbursements, directly obstructing powerful interests seeking quick access to public funds linked to the broader Mbombela Stadium and World Cup infrastructure ecosystem. These killings formed part of Mpumalanga’s notorious “January Murders,” a cluster of political assassinations occurring in the same month across consecutive years. Other related cases briefly include: James Nkambule (died 2010, suspected poisoning): An ANC politician and whistleblower who publicly alleged corruption in the stadium tender process and claimed knowledge of a hit list; he reportedly became the ninth local official to die suspiciously in roughly two years amid the scandals. Broader pattern: Suspicions of a hit squad operating in the province, with unproven affidavits from alleged contract killers naming co-conspirators and linking deaths to the protection of tender networks. Despite arrests in both Mohlala’s and Mpatlanyane’s cases (including foreign nationals and police-linked suspects in the latter), no one has been convicted for ordering or carrying out the assassinations. The underlying fraud and corruption probes tied to the Mbombela Stadium tenders also largely collapsed or stalled amid docket issues and contradictory statements. Mpatlanyane’s widow, Pinky, has repeatedly called on former Premier (and later Deputy President) David Mabuza to fulfil promises to reveal the truth behind her husband’s murder...
