I only noticed something was wrong when the taxi refused to stop at my street. The driver kept checking his mirror, slowing down, then suddenly speeding off again. “Why you dey fear this place?” I asked. He didn’t answer. He just said, “You sure say you want go there?” I laughed it off and paid him at the next junction, then walked the rest of the way. The street was unusually quiet. No dogs barking. No music. No vendors shouting. Just houses sitting like they were holding their breath. Halfway down the road, I saw a boy sitting by the gutter, playing with sand. I greeted him. He looked up slowly and said, “You still came back?” I frowned. “I don’t know you.” He didn’t reply. He just stood up and walked away without brushing the sand off his hands. That was when I noticed something strange. Every house I passed had doors slightly open like they were left that way on purpose. Then I reached my own gate. It was already open. Inside, everything looked exactly how I left it except there was a second pair of slippers at my doorstep. Wet. As if someone had just stepped out of them. Before I could move, I heard my own voice from inside the house. Calling my name. Softly. Like it had been waiting for me to return first.

I pay $125 a month for a reserved parking space behind the building where I own a business. There is a pizza shop next door. One afternoon, I pull into the small lot to park.
