@mattgould @financeguy74 Their post about it states that .ens won't be made available to the public, but rather for private brand purposes
English

DNS domains now compose 90%+ of our business, and as we move to get several of our TLDs also listed in ICANN over the next few years our focus will continue to grow on the DNS and traditional internet market. We expect that 2-3 years from now DNS and the traditional web will be 99%+ of our business.
For this reason you'll see updates on our site to reflect our new focus on traditional web2 domains. This is intentional.
Web3 only domains were part of the crypto craze in 2021 but did not cross the chasm into mainstream usage. And for a while now we have believed they will remain a niche market now and into the future.
They were a great place to start our journey into domains, but going forward our focus will be even more on the traditional market as it's the market that has crossed the chasm and is seeing mainstream usage.
English

@Sohrab @sat_eth @nicksdjohnson I agree.
Any IP/Trademarks should be reserved for the brand.
Having .ens/.eth resolve 1:1 sounds good in theory, but in practice it would be very risky with how .ens can move to new owners being inherently different.
English

I hope this is not true.
Every .eth owner should be able to claim a .ens, either for free or for a small 1-time fee
That would actually give value to both names instead of making them compete
Basically what .box does, but the pair is .eth/.ens
@nicksdjohnson is this technically possible?
validator.eth@ValidatorEth
@Agendaweb3ETH .ens would be a closed brand name at first.
English

@INVEST0RS @sat_eth @nicksdjohnson names could be on an approval basis, similar to how x-handles are done.
amazon.ens in that situation would never be approved in that application process and therefore not be issued to the .eth owner.
English

@sat_eth @Sohrab @nicksdjohnson What I am saying is .ens is under ICANN rules.
If the company Amazon hits amazon.ens with a UDRP, then they can take amazon.ens
Which leaves us with Amazon owning amazon.ens and someone else holding amazon.eth 👀
English

@Sohrab @nicksdjohnson @katherinewu Two-character TLDs are only allowed for countries (ccTLDs). Has to be a minimum of 3-characters.
English

Devastating
Being informed that .ens is mostly a defensive play with some internal utility in mind
It is not too late @nicksdjohnson& @katherinewu to apply for and secure another TLD that, in the future, you can issue on both DNS & ENS like .box did
Pls apply for one more TLD!
validator.eth@ValidatorEth
English

@Sohrab @katherinewu Unfortunately they have to pick a path (private/public) and stick to it (as current ICANN processes).
Private TLD makes it useless (a vanity / brand / esthetic acquire). Shouldn't bother spending funds for that.
English

I believe the obvious move for ENS, after being granted the .ens TLD, is to allow every .eth owner to claim the matching .ens pair for free (or maybe a small 1-time fee)
Hopefully yearly renewal fee structure also changes to something more reasonable

We are applying for .ens in the upcoming gTLD round. If naming is to serve as global identity, it must be secure, interoperable, and built to last. Teams exploring Web3 naming in the DNS can reach out. Read our complete statement by @aurbelis ⤵️ icann.org/en/public-comm…
English

@Sohrab @nicksdjohnson @katherinewu Yeah, something like ".ecom" or ".eee" etc to bridge the actual ENS users to DNS.
Not sure who's providing the advice there, but this move seems short-sighted.
English

@ageesen @katherinewu That's what I thought would happen too, but apparently they have no intention of opening up registrations or claims of any kind to the public, which is a huge misstep and quite lazy tbh
They're securing .ens as a defensive play and for private use by the labs team. Unimaginative
English

@Sohrab @katherinewu Won't happen. ICANN has strict rules (which were not followed in the initial distribution of .eth domains). They need a reset.
Most will be able to claim their corresponding .ens (if allowef at all). Others with restricted, brand or sunrise-period-domains will not.
