Large parts of Bogwang-dong and Hannam-dong in Seoul’s Yongsan-gu are being demolished for the Hannam District 3, or New Town, redevelopment project. This comes 17 years after the area was designated a promotion district. The plan calls for 127 high rises w/ 22 floors max.

Reporting on this tragedy has felt like watching a train wreck in slow motion. The vast majority of people facing forced repatriation were likely simply living their lives, be it undocumented. In the DPRK, they will face torture, detention, or worse, the UN and experts say.
