These findings highlight a novel adaptation shared between the Alveolata, by which transcription factors evolved into RNA-binding proteins. Targeting this unique mitoribosome assembly machinery could open new possibilities to treat diseases such as malaria and toxoplasmosis. 🦠💊

In this article, a repertoire of apical polar ring proteins was studied and assigned to the different APR layers. Among them, APR2 contributed to parasite's motility and invasion and its depletion caused destabilisation of the APR middle layer and F-actin leakage to the cytosol.
