A big thank you to Psychologist Nyagah Mugo from @SolidMindsRw for joining today's episode of #WellnessAndRelationships on #KigaliInTheMorning. The discussion explored how identity is formed during adolescence, why ages 13–25 are crucial for personal development, and the role parents play in guiding young people without limiting their growth. Nyagah also highlighted how a strong identity builds confidence, shapes careers, strengthens relationships, and helps young people make purposeful life decisions.

A strong home is built on a shared vision and intentional leadership. When guidance and direction are absent, confusion and disarray can easily take root. True leadership is not about control, it's about showing up, taking responsibility, and stepping into your rightful place to protect, guide, and build together. @solidmindsrw #KigaliInTheMorning #WellnessAndRelationships

While these roles are important, fathers are people too. They have emotions, challenges, fears, and needs that deserve attention and care. This Father's Day, may we encourage fathers everywhere to extend the same compassion they give to others to themselves.

Dear Men, You show up for everyone around you. It’s time to show up for yourself, too. You answer every call. You hold things together when they are falling apart. You are the steady one, the strong one, the one everyone leans on when things get difficult. And you do it well. But somewhere along the way, you slowly move yourself to the bottom of the list, maybe even off it entirely. Yet you need the same energy you pour into everything and everyone you care about. You deserve that same commitment. Prioritizing your mental health is not selfish. It is not weakness. And it is not stepping away from your responsibilities. It is what allows you to stay. It allows you to keep showing up, more present, more grounded, more whole. The people around you don’t just need your presence. They need you. Not the version that keeps going, but the one that is also thriving. So this June, as we are in Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, allow yourself to give a little of what you give to others back to yourself. Start small. Speak to someone you trust. Take a moment to check in with yourself the way you check in on everyone else. Pay attention to what you have been ignoring. You have always known how to show up. Now it is time to show up for the most important person in your life, YOU.

As argued by several psychologists, the demandingness (control/rules) and responsiveness (warmth/support) in parenting matters. I learnt that the best possible style of parenting as recommended by Mr Mihigo from @SolidMindsRw is Authoritative Parenting. It is true that in this style of parenting where parents set clear rules and expectations, by explaining reasons, listening to the child, and showing warmth, in the end; children are encouraged to be independent, to reason, and to regulate their emotions when demands are not respected by the parent. If one was to relate by lived experiences growing up; the tangible and evident outcomes show that children tend to be confident, socially skilled, academically successful, and emotionally stable if listened to and advised accordingly. I interacted with a certain parent who eventually told me that the best way to train a child is by empowering them to handle situational challenges whenever faced. Even if one was to be strict on a child, it is important to recognise their feedback or responses, advise and come up with the suitable and commendable solution that works for both of you. Remember that you will not always be with the child, hence empower them as much as possible to overcome the life's hurdles when encountered. #WellnessAndRelationships
