I appreciate Moody’s recognition of our actions to tackle Jersey City’s fiscal crisis. It was only last December that the credit rating firm said Jersey City was a “financially struggling city with deteriorating liquidity profile,” and downgraded our credit rating. Today’s report recognizes the real changes we are making to stabilize our city finances. They described our transparency and actions as a “governance improvement compared to recent history” and “actions in the past few weeks under a new mayor demonstrate a commitment to finally taking the first steps on a long road to fiscal recovery.”  Accountability and leadership - that is what we promised for Jersey City and that is what we are delivering.

Jersey City is launching a formal audit of all health insurance claims paid by our previous administrator, Horizon. Our reinsurance provider flagged potential overbilling patterns. Horizon is legally required to cooperate and repay anything improperly billed. We believe significant money is owed to Jersey City taxpayers. Jersey City fought. Jersey City won. For years, our community stood up against a $10.7 billion highway expansion that would have poured more traffic and pollution through our neighborhoods. Today, that plan is dead. No six-lane Turnpike tearing through our city. No second bridge doubling down on car traffic. Just a community that refused to give up — and a Governor who listened. Proud to share that our Senior Policy Advisor Isaac Smith traveled to Trenton today to testify before the State Senate Environmental Committee in support of the Liberty State Park Protection Act. For years, we've fought hard to protect this oasis in the city from privatization schemes—whether it was proposals to build a stadium in the park or attempts turn Caven Point into golf course for millionaires . Those battles taught us one thing: we need permanent protections. This legislation locks in our vision for Liberty State Park's future. It prevents the privatization or leasing any part of the park's interior or the environmentally critical Caven Point. Thank you to the Assembly committee that advanced this vital legislation today. Christ Hospital has closed. We fought, and we will keep fighting. I directed our Corporation Counsel to file a motion to keep the doors open. The judge ruled against us. But I am committed to using every tool available to get healthcare back to the Heights — including eminent domain. What happened here was a corporate actor that thought it was above the law. That flouted the process. That walked away from a community that needed them. We will hold them accountable. #ChristHospital #JerseyCity

Today, at my direction, Corporation Counsel Sarah M. Levine is filing for an injunction in New Jersey Superior Court to stop Hudson Regional Health from illegally closing Heights University Hospital. HRH has methodically degraded this hospital's services, and now seeks to shut its doors without following the state’s laws for changes to a hospital’s services. These aren't bureaucratic formalities. They exist to protect communities like ours. Jersey City is a city of 300,000+ residents served by just two hospitals. We cannot afford to lose one, and we will fight while a corporation breaks the law to abandon the Heights community. Jersey City does not negotiate with the lives of our residents.
