A recent article by @SomalilandChro1 raises serious questions about the biometric registration system for Somaliland’s security forces. While reform to modernize and prevent payroll fraud is welcome, the involvement of Innovii, a foreign company with operations in Somalia, is deeply concerning. The article highlights risks linked to outsourcing sensitive military data, drawing comparisons to Afghanistan, where biometric data fell into the wrong hands, and Somalia, where Al-Shabaab has infiltrated institutions. Why weren’t local institutions like the National Electoral Commission, which has experience managing biometric systems, fully involved? Why risk outsourcing sensitive military data to external actors? Strengthening security should never come at the cost of exposing our forces to potential threats. We need transparent answers, proper vetting, and accountability to ensure our reforms protect us, not endanger us. #Somaliland #SecurityReform #Accountability #DataPrivacy

In Somaliland, CCF is also protecting cheetahs and empowering local communities through innovative ecological research. As part of broader efforts to understand cheetah populations in the Horn of Africa, CCF’s ecological research is combining technology and community insights to address the biggest threat to cheetahs in the region – the illicit trade in wildlife, which continues to threaten wild cheetah populations. Last November, a multidisciplinary team launched a pioneering field surveying expedition focused on mapping the status, range, and distribution of cheetahs across Somaliland, the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia, and Puntland. Following approval from Somaliland’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC), in January of this year 72 camera traps were deployed in Somaliland’s rugged and mountainous Awdal Region. These surveys will provide greater insight into the cheetah’s habitat and help us understand its current population. Community engagement is also central to this work. Researchers have also partnered with local nomadic communities, who add critical context to the ecological data. This collaboration not only enhances our research, but also builds important relationships that help our conservation initiatives succeed. There is still work to be done to bring Somaliland’s elections up to international standards. As we launch our final report, we hope our recommendations will be useful in helping Somaliland as it continues its democratic journey. With the next parliamentary elections not at all far away, the focus must be kept and this important work must go on.”
