La Sacra di San Michele, outside Turin in the Piedmont region, Italy, that’s next. Then it’s Monte Sant'Angelo, Mount Gargano, also Italy. It’s only 15 miles or so from Padre Pio’s shrine so I’ll get to go on a pilgrimage to Saint Pio too, god willing. Next is The Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis, Symi in the Greek islands and lastly Stella Maris monastery, Mount Carmel, Haifa, Israel. I’m still learning and piecing together this celestial jigsaw but these journies so far have turned out to be the most revelatory, edifying adventures. I’ve learned a lot about the Saints of each region too and it basically feels like I just follow their spiritual breadcrumbs.

I organised it myself. Skellig Michael is the difficult part because you’re relying on the boat being able to land on the rock but it was only a 65% landing success rate the year before I went. I chose the very first day of the season. The boats only take you there from mid May to September i believe. It’s a gamble because there’s no guarantee that the boat will depart until the very hour you’re set to go. Luckily, I made it there. I stayed in a place in Port Magee just 2 minutes drive from the harbour. I recommend booking well in advance of your preferred date. I had one shot and managed it. I’ve been around quite a bit but this journey and destination may well be the most epic of my life.
