I think what Critical Role and Stranger Things has done for dungeons and dragons is so cool. I’ve been playing since the 90s, so seeing how the game is no longer some big taboo thing even other nerds would avoid associating with you for playing, is awesome! The weird downside to me, is that people who are new to the game expect to be the main character. There have always been people who dominate the spotlight, but it was considered bad table etiquette, and we teased that sort of player for being a bit of a dick… Now people expect a game that runs like an episode of a show, where one of the players matters more than all the others and is the most powerful and special… but the only reason that’s how CR and ST works is because they are making a show. It has to have main characters. A good DM balances storylines and plot points between all their players, and gives something in every session for each person to feel like they succeeded at. (Or failed at dramatically, naturally)
