Iran displacement: @Refugees reports that an estimated 100,000 people left the Iranian capital Tehran in the first 2 days of the attacks, with approximately 1,000–2,000 vehicles per day leaving mostly towards the north. No significant cross border movements have been reported.

Countries across Latin America have shown remarkable solidarity in hosting refugees. I met with their envoys at UNHCR today to discuss advancing protection, inclusion and durable solutions across the region. Sustained international support is essential to match their generosity.

I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East. The use of force by the United States & Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace & security.   All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the @UN. The Charter clearly prohibits “the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”   I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities & de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians & regional stability. I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table.   I reiterate that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.

High Commissioner for Refugees @BarhamSalih has arrived in Chad 🇹🇩, as the country continues to host refugees displaced by the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Today he held meetings with Chadian authorities and will spend time engaging with refugees, host communities and partners.

In Adre, at the Chadian border, I met Sudanese refugees who just fled the horrors of war at home. UNHCR is playing a crucial role here, ensuring people find safety and protection, shelter and other vital assistance. But it is far from enough, given the scale of this calamity.

I saw how refugees have access to healthcare, education, and play an active part in society benefiting the whole community. This is how we move from aid dependency to self-reliance. Kenya is doing its part. It needs greater international support.
