Exclusive: Kremlin videos meant to show Vladimir Putin calmly working as the Iran war escalates may not be what they claim. An investigation by Systema, the investigative unit of RFE/RL's Russian service @SvobodaRadio, found several "recent" meetings published by the Kremlin were actually recorded earlier. The clue? Plants in Putin's office. 1/4 🧵

New @RFERL investigation from Russian and Ukrainian investigative units (Systema and @cxemu): A trove of leaked data from a Russian Major General reveals a culture of systemic bribery. From "monetary obligations" to the mistreatment of detainees, the findings offer granular evidence of internal military rot. rferl.org/a/russia-milit…

The Kremlin footage seemed calculated to suggest that while the United States and Israel were bombarding longtime Russian partner country Iran, it was business as usual for President Vladimir Putin. rferl.org/a/putin-canned…

4 года большой преступной войны, за которую россияне заплатили, мы знаем по именам, больше 200 тысяч человек. И почти всех из них мы смогли найти на карте: получилась вся страна. Нет ни одного крупного города без погибших 200.zona.media

Finally an industry professional underlines the obvious truth. a 1 in 4 response rate to a door knocking is implausible in Russia.
AB@bougakov

@Volod_Ishchenko Levada’s numbers aren’t polling, it is propaganda. They claim implausible 27% response rates on in-home interviews (which means 4 doors knocked = 1 complete questionnaire). In practice they (at best) survey the same bunch of gullible people over and over. Worthless data.

Some New Year’s Eve Kremlinology for you. This year, Dmitry Medvedev made his own New Year’s address, in addition to Putin’s. This is against protocol and very odd altogether. Once a “systemic liberal”, Medvedev served as a court jester since the start of big war - someone who “speaks his mind”. His role was to match and at times exceed the madness of pro-Ukraine commentary, which the Kremlin dubs “megaphone diplomacy”. This allows Putin to avoid engaging in petty squabbles and come across as an adult in the room domestically and some extent internationally. Now this address is quite different - not jester-ish and markedly less war-oriented than Putin’s. More than anything, it sounds presidential. The return of Medvedev, aged 60, would be the softest departure path for Putin some time after the war ends - either in 2030 or earlier. Watch this space.

Elections in Chile reminded of a well-forgotten story about Vladimir Putin praising Pinochet as a 'desirable' model for Russia back in '93 – and, 6 years later, advised again to adopt it by one of his 'liberal' aides. Together with @Soshnikoff and @pustota smarturl.click/y6m63
