I’ve been in the media industry since September of 2002 starting as an intern at the @thescorechicago. It’s now almost 24 years later and yet I’m still navigating a way to be a part of an industry I’ve grown to love. It wasn’t my first choice. I kind of fell into the business by opportunity presented, support and hard work. There’s no doubt there’s a lot of luck also included. I’ve always tried to represent myself as how I’d like to be treated. Kind. Fun. Celebrate the wins. Comfort and grow in the losses. But be myself with no guardrails. I am me because that’s all I know how to be. The quiet moments are the best times I find to reflect. An empty airport with a cup of joe is always a winner in my book. I’ve lived a blessed life. I’ve seen more places and met people I never thought I’d have the opportunity to get close to. I’ve tried to provide opportunity for others to grow. I’ve also tried to support when times are tough. As I sit here staring at this sign, it dawned on me. I’m going home to a place I never thought I’d call home. I’m blessed to have an amazing family that loves me despite my failings. I have an amazing woman to call mine who supports me and challenges me to experience life more everyday. All because everything I’ve given has gotten me to this time in my life. I am blessed. Despite the struggles of life, which there are many, we don’t take time to reflect on where we are and how we got there. I choose to stop, reflect, and share. Because I am me. That’s all I know. Find the blessings in your life. Cherish them for as long as you have them. Tomorrow is never guaranteed. Approach everyday as a new beginning. Live your life. The one you choose to lead. And bring everyone you can along for the ride. But also…. Find time to empty yourself and let the world around you be the refill. Enjoy the weekend -John

Rachel - I want to love you. But c'mon. A few factual issues with this piece: The Online Streaming Act does not create a direct tax on Canadians. It imposes financial contribution requirements on large streaming companies. Whether those costs are ultimately passed on to consumers is a prediction, not an established fact. You also blur the distinction between a tax, a regulatory levy, and mandated spending requirements. Those are not the same thing legally or politically. There is also little evidence that the Act will determine what Canadians can watch. The debate is really about discoverability and the promotion of Canadian content, not government control over individual viewing choices. There are valid concerns about this Act—including increased regulatory complexity, potential impacts on competition, unintended consequences for creators, and whether the CRTC is the right body to oversee online platforms. Those arguments are strong enough on their own. You don’t need to twist facts to make the case that this legislation is deeply flawed. Canadians are capable of evaluating the policy based on what it actually does, and I suspect many would appreciate a debate grounded in accuracy rather than exaggeration. I say all this with kindness because creating alternate facts kills trust and prevents governments from getting elected.
