Thank you for your responses. It’s as I suspected. How about: generational farms can be IHT exempt in the interest of domestic carrots etc. But if a succeeding generation stops farming or sells the land for development, they can be shafted the same as the rest of us. Too naive?
James May@MrJamesMay

I’m trying to follow the great farming debate but, as an economics illiterate, I’m baffled. If a farm has a nominal value of, say, £3m but generates an income of only c. £40k, how can it really be worth that much? This is not, bt dubs, a loaded question. I’m interested.

@actonblue @Otto_English Yes I did vote for Brexit and it’s had no affect whatsoever on my life. It obviously has affected more than your life as you’re still banging on about it 8 years later. Rather sad if you ask me.

The protestors today want you to call it "the tractor tax." In fact, farmers pay no road tax, and as they come into London, they'll pay no ULEZ and no congestion charge either. Exempt. This is not about tractors. It's about inheritance tax.

@DarrylMcGarvey @DaleVince The same argument can be made for any small family business. Why are farmers deserving of special treatment other families don't get?

@DaleVince Because for farmers, the land is the asset on which they make their living? It's not cash, it's not a home. It's a business asset. They work long hours, 7 days a week, not taking holidays to eke out an existence from the land.

No reporter seems to have yet found an 80-year-old farmer who still owns their own land and has children to pass it on to. Maybe that's because most family farmers pass it on in their 60s, and die after any IHT is due? It's a tax only paid by people who don't trust their children. All this 'I want to pass it on', clearly you don't.

🇬🇧BACK OUR BRITISH FARMERS 🚜 🇬🇧 This cruel raid on the hard working British farmers does little for public services. The £500m this raises is 1 day of funding for the NHS. The bill for civil servants increased by £8bn in the last 5 years I hope the Govt correct their mistake

@SueSuezep @BrianBronktie @book_mell You obviously don't understand how that can pretty quickly be filtered down as people die and pay inheritance TAX, it doesn't mean they may have the money to cover it, many will have to sell bits of their land or farm each time

I agree with your perspective. The main point I was trying to convey is that many individuals are gravitating towards alternative platforms due to their struggles in confronting opposing viewpoints. Instead of engaging with challenging counterarguments, they find comfort in staying within their echo chambers, where their beliefs are constantly reinforced. This tendency creates an environment where they feel validated without having to confront differing opinions. A case in point is Getter, which has attracted users looking for a space that aligns with their views. However, I believe that over time, these individuals will eventually return to mainstream platforms, as the allure of broader discussions and diverse perspectives often outweighs the temporary satisfaction of staying in a sheltered online environment.

Flouncing off a social media platform because an election didn’t go their way is hilariously immature. A total lack of emotional intelligence. Some people just want to live in a tribalism echo chamber and throw their toys out of the pram at anyone who has different opinions. Debating and listening to different opinions is healthy. We can learn from alternative ideas and viewpoints. But for some, any different opinions results in purging those who think differently, even if it’s on just one issue. Utterly pathetic.

@Lord_Woodsy @JamesMelville Free speech surely means the freedom to speak where you want. You may be free to spout bile and gibberish, but I am equally free to decide that you have nothing worthwhile to say and to choose another platform. Nothing in free speech compels anyone to listen to you.

@JamesMelville It’s clear that they have little regard for the principle of free speech, James. It’s truly disappointing and somewhat pathetic to see such a lack of commitment to open dialogue and the exchange of differing viewpoints.

@peterjukes All it takes for Trump (or any RW replacement, like Vance) to run for a 3rd+ term is an Amendment to the Constitution. While they dominate the House and Senate, what are the chances we'll have a 28th Amendment for that purpose?

Trump is such a unique character. Does the fact he can’t run again mean that Republicans will start to rebel? Will his second term end up more like the chaos of the Tories under Johnson, Truss and Sunak?
