Reminds me of Drop 3635 and the referenced movie "OFFICIAL SECRETS," of real-life whistleblower Katharine Gun. The film is based on true events from early 2003, in the lead-up to the Iraq War. The events in the film occurred over two decades ago, but the theme of intelligence or information being weaponized to justify military action remains strikingly resonant with Kent's accusations in the current context. Katherine Gun, a Mandarin translator working at Britain's GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters), receives a classified memo from the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA). The memo requests British assistance in a joint operation to spy on and gather compromising information ("dig dirt") on diplomats from non-permanent UN Security Council member states (such as Chile, Cameroon, Bulgaria, and Guinea). The goal is to pressure, influence, or potentially blackmail these delegates into voting in favor of a UN resolution authorizing the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. Horrified by what she sees as an illegal effort to manipulate the UN and justify an unjust war based on questionable pretenses (including the broader context of disputed claims about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, or WMDs), Gun leaks the memo to a friend connected to the anti-war movement. It eventually reaches The Observer newspaper, which publishes a front-page story exposing the "dirty tricks" to secure UN support for the war. Gun later confesses to the leak to protect her colleagues from suspicion. She faces arrest and charges under the UK's Official Secrets Act, risking imprisonment. The film follows her legal battle, personal struggles (including threats to her Muslim husband Yasar's immigration status), and the broader implications of government deception in pushing for war. Ultimately, the charges against her are dropped. The movie highlights themes of conscience, whistleblowing, government manipulation of international bodies, and the use of intelligence operations to manufacture support for military action. ★ Relevance to Joe Kent's resignation letter and claims about manipulated intelligence regarding Israel and Iran: – The core parallel lies in allegations of manipulated or misleading intelligence/information being used to justify or push for war. In Official Secrets, the leaked memo reveals Anglo-American intelligence agencies engaging in espionage and potential blackmail to force UN backing for the 2003 Iraq invasion—part of a broader pattern where intelligence (including exaggerated WMD claims) was accused of being "fixed" or manipulated around policy decisions to go to war. In Joe Kent's recent resignation letter (as Director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center under President Trump), he protested the ongoing U.S. war with Iran, claiming: Iran posed no imminent threat to the United States. – The war was initiated due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby. High-ranking Israeli officials and influential American media figures deployed a misinformation campaign to undermine Trump's "America First" stance, sowing pro-war sentiments by deceiving the administration into believing Iran was an imminent danger with a path to swift victory. He drew a direct comparison to the Iraq War, calling it "the same tactic the Israelis used to draw us into the disastrous Iraq war." – Kent framed this as foreign influence and misinformation subverting U.S. policy, leading to an unnecessary conflict—echoing the movie's depiction of intelligence operations and manipulation to enable war (though in Official Secrets, it involves U.S.-UK actions against the UN for Iraq, while Kent accuses Israel of misleading the U.S. into Iran action). – Critics of Kent's letter have described it as promoting conspiracy theories (including antisemitic tropes about undue Israeli/Jewish influence), while supporters see it as a bold stand against foreign manipulation.
