Most theories of intelligence start with the individual — a mind that perceives, decides, and acts.
But what if that's backwards?
What if the individual isn't the starting point, but a temporary stabilization of a deeper process?
This is the core idea of Open-Ended Intelligence.

Ben Goertzel, who wrote the preface to the book, puts it this way:
"Open-Ended Intelligence is probably the single most critical theoretical element missing from our contemporary understanding of intelligence."
AGI won't come from better loss functions. It will come from systems that can *choose their own becoming.*
There's a quiet revolution happening in AI safety research. People are starting to ask: what if intelligence isn't about optimizing a reward function at all?
The answer changes everything. 🧵
@mbauwens Very sad to get the news. I wish you a quick and complete recovery. In our short acquaintance I became sure that your life and presence are very valuable to the pursuit of a sane future of humanity. You shine on you crazy diamond! You are in my thoughts… 🌈
A message from Michel Bauwens:
dear friends, I I have unfortunately experienced a stroke (triple) and still in the Chulalonghuhornh hospital. At this stage, I cannot assess whether I can would be able to go back to the type acvitities I have engaged myself since 2005. My brain function right now is very slow and meticulous, we will see how it evolves. This is the minimal amount of information that I can pass on. Fortunutaly my wife and family have moliblized. Jeff Emmett and Bryian should be better informated abut the events.
This book is for anyone who suspects that our current frameworks for understanding intelligence — whether in AI, cognitive science, or philosophy — are missing something essential.

The implications are radical:
• AGI won't emerge from scaling loss functions. It needs systems that can change their own axes of evaluation.
• Consciousness isn't a property — it's a phase in a process.
• Intelligence without purpose isn't broken. It's the original form.
There's a quiet revolution happening in the philosophy of mind, and most AI researchers haven't noticed it yet.
It starts with a simple question: What if the primary metaphysical reality isn't the *individual* — but the process of *individuation*?
A thread. 🧵
