Also @sparklebliss ‘s book Coin Operated Americans is focused on exactly this topic.

When and how did video games become a "boys' thing"?

@PieterVdHeede @bramderidder89 @HistoryNGames @Alex_Vandewalle @LarsdeWildt @EstherWrigh_ @DrSepinwall @CsillaAriese @florencesn @dg_history @RabeaRi Thanks for the shoutout. I'd also add any/all of the authors who've contributed to the Influential Game Designers book series, plus folks publishing in ROMchip (or serving on the board). Alan Meades is a great interview.

@bowmanspartan @jess_tompkins_ @SonjaUtz Yeah, I'd be willing to believe chapters have a longer tail. I suspect part of what's happening with at least one of mine is it's getting assigned in classes, and so it's circulating a specific way.
English

@jess_tompkins_ @sparklebliss @SonjaUtz HAAH! Nah, you’re not wrong in *so many* ways. The “life cycle” of the book chapter is very different, and that’s a good thing for use to keep in mind. =)
English

@bowmanspartan @SonjaUtz @jess_tompkins_ Just went and checked, and my book chapters don't seem to be any more or less cited than other things (save my first monograph, which is cited MUCH more than anything else I've done).
English

@SonjaUtz @jess_tompkins_ I've had a pair hit over 100 - one focused on a history of moral panic in gaming (s/o to @sparklebliss) and the other explicated presence in gaming contexts. Neither could have ever been published in journals, tbh.
But yeh, generally they're .. tough.
English

@sivavaid @FromPhDtoLife Yeah, maybe it's because I work at an engineering school so there's an expectation that tons of our students won't work in higher ed but ... we actually require students to do professionalization towards non-academic careers as part of grad curriculum.
English

@DanAmrich Robot-obsessed kid will flip for that. Will see if we can get photos! A lot of the add ons were sold out, but never hurts to ask on site. We have done in-park shots with family in AK, and they're some of the best photos I have of my parents.
English

@DanAmrich Thanks! It seems like there's a bunch of different paths through that are fun, so we threw together some outfits and away we go! I didn't see your post, so will hold until I get back. If there's anything you think I definitely should know to do, please let me know!
English

@DanAmrich @KatrinAuch I had hoped to go when my kid was a little older, but uh ... given circumstances, we booked one of the very last available rooms, and we're dropping everything to go. (This is very unlike us in general. I'm a meticulous planner, and this is not that.)

Stop by the exhibit on TRON they have up! They've got some neat stuff to see, and it's totally kid friendly. My 5 year old has proven herself surprisingly good at Sonic.

Just met @sparklebliss at the @chigamespace exhibit! Wonderful to meet someone whose writings I've read ever since I got into game history. Great meeting of the minds can happen anywhere!
English

@BlackbirdVortex @illinoistech Thank you! I'm really excited about it.
English

@sparklebliss @illinoistech Yay! Congrats🎉
English

TFW you work with a bunch of colleagues for years to build a game design program @illinoistech and now it exists

@nuclear94 The front page of the paper was a very pathetic electrocuted snake hanging off the substation. I tried to find an article, but ... apparently this happens all the time.
English

@sparklebliss No but it probably involves a town knocking out a snake.

Dispatchable power plants are shutting down without enough capacity to replace them. The grid is in trouble. wsj.com/articles/s-o-s…

@Sierra_OffLine @stkirsch Like ... on what planet would you believe some random dude on a plane was actually going to give you $100k? I would have been too busy being mad he was interrupting my book.
English

@Sierra_OffLine This is also weirdly ignoring the hyperstructuring of childhood. Like, how many activities and lessons are these kids in is probably a huge factor.
English

@theshirarose I know this isn't the point but where did you get that exquisite dress?

Today is #worldobesityday & if you’re a clinician working in the ED field while also treating “ob*sity,” congratulations, you are part of the damn problem. Today I thought I’d be extra visible because I am the fattest I’ve ever been & also the most free from my ED I’ve ever been.
