Members of Afrekete’s executive board gathered for a meaningful conversation with President Emerita Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, reflecting on Afrekete’s legacy as a Womanist organization. During her presidency, Dr. Cole championed the recognition of Afrekete and spoke to the campus community about the importance of affirming and supporting all students. Today, we continue that legacy by creating safe, educational, and creative spaces for our community.

We are honored to announce MS NOW’s Symone Sanders Townsend as the keynote speaker for Spelman College’s 139th Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 17, 2026. A dynamic force at the intersection of politics, media, and advocacy, Symone has built a career defined by breaking barriers, shaping national conversations, and amplifying voices that matter. From becoming the youngest presidential press secretary in history to serving in the White House to anchoring on MS NOW’s primetime and leading on major media platforms, her impact is undeniable. In recognition of her trailblazing career and contributions to public discourse, she will also receive an honorary doctorate from Spelman College. We look forward to the insight, inspiration, and truth she will share with the Class of 2026 as they step into their next chapter. The Fulton County Board of Health has partnered with Spelman College’s Health Careers Program to place students in hands-on roles across its offices, giving them real-world experience in a range of healthcare fields. Experience the magic live on stage! The Spelman College Department of Theatre and Performance proudly presents The Color Purple, the acclaimed musical based on Alice Walker’s beloved novel. Directed by Jade Lambert-Smith, this powerful production features music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray. What an amazing full‑circle moment to celebrate! Internationally recognized artist and Spelman alumna Calida Rawles, C’98, returned to campus for the opening of her Away with the Tides exhibit at the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art. It was also incredible to witness her legacy flourish through her daughter—now a Spelman student in the AUC Art Collective and a museum ambassador where Rawles art is on display.
