it’s only fair to put the “Filipinx” label under scrutiny as (1) it is being imposed on mainlanders under colonial assumptions & (2) endorsed in Western academe disengaged from our own culture/history w/ the threat of epistemic hegemony where “Filipino” already becomes offensive
Dr. Pamela Cajilig@anthropam

Like many Pinoys born/raised in PH I say "Filipino" in a gender neutral sense I use "Filipina" to emphasize womanhood I understand that migrant/FilAm groups need "Filipinx" to show queer BIPOC solidarity in the US Pluralistic & intersectional nationalism is possible 🤷‍♀️

@danniishere_ Its origins owe much to the emergence of Latinx as an inclusionary label for queer members. But these Filipinos, esp Fil-Ams, from the diaspora have to understand that “Filipino” has evolved past the binary of masculine/feminine of its colonial roots.

@SpillTati genuine question: why do you think the term exists? bc i feel like we have different ideas of the concept and we end up talking past each other haha

@danniishere_ and that’s an entirely diff conversation beyond op’s point. invoking our pre-colonial past is recognition of the fact that gender-neutrality has existed in local consciousness. and “progressive” is such a tenuous term, according to whom exactly & does it lean on western trends?

@SpillTati yeah not denying that. i just honestly find it disingenuous for people to invoke our precolonial past as proof that we’re progressive when our current contempo state doesn’t reflect that? like no, our culture NOW isnt accepting when ppl are literally getting discriminated on

@danniishere_ im pretty sure there is a very clear intersection of native filipinos advocating for the same causes who are also critical of “filipinx” as a label. they arent mutually exclusive y’know. no one is absolving the patriarchy in the country…

@SpillTati i just find it annoying when people invoke pre-colonial wokeness/gender acceptance but still on the whole, won’t let sogie bill pass? or exclude trans women in women’s month? or have bigots run the country? parang “there is no war in ba sing se” yung vibes lol

the way they’re talking down on natives about a language they dont even speak nor understand the intricacies of… watch your tone. are europeans really not self-aware of their hegemonic and colonial tendencies in conforming our language/identity through western framing?

god forbid we frame our language/s through a decolonial perspective, where our identities are not diluted to shallow western tokenism.

ironic how they even held a summit discussing issues in the industry during the festival. but not surprising given how the public is always excluded. intellectual circle j*kol.

A Fil-Am trying to lecture us on our language… this is exactly the type of audience Forgotten Island caters to
