A Chinese Navy commando surfaced from the water with a sparrow in his hand. He let it go. The sparrow flew off, flapping its wings. It was a drone. This is part of a Chinese military program called Dove, run from a major research university in Xi'an. The lead scientist, Song Bifeng, used to be a senior engineer on China's J-20 stealth fighter before he switched to building robotic birds. By 2018, more than 30 Chinese military and government agencies had already deployed bird drones, with heavy use in Xinjiang. China's best bird drone is called Xinge. That means Carrier Pigeon. It weighs 260 grams, about the weight of a large smartphone. Wingspan: 70 cm, same as a real pigeon. In October 2023 the Xinge broke the Guinness World Record for a flapping-wing drone, flying 3 hours, 5 minutes, 30 seconds on a single battery charge. The category goes back decades. In 1968 the CIA built a bird-shaped drone with a 7.5-foot wingspan, about the size of a bald eagle, designed to fly for 50 hours straight. The CIA's bigger plan was to swap in nuclear power so the drone could fly non-stop 30-day missions over the Soviet Union. The project ran over budget. The drones were boxed up and stored at Area 51. The US returned to the idea in 2011. DARPA, the Pentagon's research arm, paid AeroVironment to build a hummingbird-shaped drone weighing 19 grams (less than a single AA battery). Germany's Festo unveiled a robotic seagull the same year. Norway built the Black Hornet, an 18-gram drone that fits in your hand. The UK first deployed it in 2012, followed by other NATO armies. A US defense firm called Teledyne FLIR bought the Norwegian maker for $134 million in 2016. The clip going around right now is actually from August 1, 2024, a Chinese Navy Marine Corps shooting competition where the commando launched the sparrow-drone after surfacing. China's 2025 Beijing military expo showed the next step: bird-shaped drones with small explosives strapped on, designed to fly into a target and self-destruct. The same expo also unveiled the weapon to stop them. The K-25 is a turret with a small rifle that hits bird-sized targets 200 meters away (about two football fields) with 90% accuracy. The arms race for fake birds is already running.
