Happy birthday to current Owasso and former Eastwood Baptist, Spiro, Edmond Memorial, Union, Fayetteville and University of Tulsa head football coach Bill Blankenship, born on this day in 1956 in Spiro, Oklahoma. Blankenship was a star athlete at Spiro and was named first team All-State by the Tulsa World following the 1974 season and was 29-4-1 as the team's starting quarterback. He went on to play collegiately at the University of Tulsa, playing in 33 games and passing for 2,113 yards and eight touchdowns and rushing for six others. He became a head coach for the first time at Eastwood Baptist, coaching the Knights for two seasons before becoming offensive coordinator at Sapulpa in 1985. In 1986, he returned home to Spiro as head coach of the Bulldogs, guiding the team for four seasons, including a state championship game appearance in his second season in 1987. In 1990, he was hired at Edmond Memorial, where he went 12-10 in two seasons before a 14-year stint at Union, which included state championships in 2002, 2004 and 2005. In 2006, he became receivers coach at the University of Tulsa and when head coach Todd Graham left following the 2010 season, Blankenship was named head coach. Blankenship won Conference USA Coach of the Year after helping lead the Golden Hurricane to the conference championship in 2012. He was 24-27 in four seasons with Tulsa and returned to high school coaching in 2016 at Fayetteville (AR), where in his only season, he led the team to the Class 7A Arkansas state championship. He returned to Oklahoma and took the head coaching vacancy at Owasso High School in 2017, leading the Rams to the state championship in his first season. The Rams won again in 2019 and made a title game appearance in 2022. Following the 2023 season, he announced his retirement, but returned in 2025 and led the Rams back to the state championship game again. In 31 seasons of coaching high school football, Blankenship is 294-89 and has won six state championships. Happy birthday Coach Blankenship! #tdfn #okpreps @CoachBBlank @OwassoAthletics @UnionFootball @Spiro_Bulldogs @emhsbulldogs @FayBulldogsFB @TulsaFootball
