The operative intuition against property taxes looks something like this: * If you're already working and the gov taxes some of it away, then that's not great, but you already needed to work, so it's not a binary change. * If you have to pay taxes to own land, then there's never any way to be free of that burden. It's a step change from, "I own this" to, "I rent it from the government." It may be a binary change from, "I can live on savings" vs. "my largest expense, by far, is my property taxes, for which I must now seek employment." You can have whatever opinions you want to about this intuition -- I gather than many leftists are repulsed by it -- but it's a quintessentially American perspective to want to have to ability to be free of the government in this particular way.
