We take it a step further with practice data. We have developed a performance rating index (PRI) based off the practice data we have already accumulated. Our PRI is broken down per position and shows who is the best (1) and who is performing at the worst (14) in each selected statistical category. I.e. The player who has the most assists is first, or 1. The player who has the least assists is last, or 14, in that category. If you are tied with a teammate at sixth on the team in assists then you would be t-6. The closer your cumulative average rank is 1, the better you are. If you are close to 14 then you are performing at the lowest end amongst your teammates. This chart shows all players how they rank amongst all their teammates and specifically at their position (names are blacked out).

How should a coach determine who plays and who doesn’t? Who starts and who comes off the bench? Who are the feature players and who are the role players? Coaches shouldn’t make these decisions. The players should. It’s all about practice and measurables for us. Here are our seven staples of practice: 1. Every practice is filmed 2. Every practice has a heavy dose of live drills 3. Stats and data points are recorded for all live drills 4. Daily stats are sent to our players after practice 5. Cumulative stats are also sent to our players after each practice which encompasses their entire practice body of work 6. Practice film is clipped up and sent to our players each night so they can access them from their phone and computer to watch, learn, and grow. 7. Immediately prior to our next practice, we watch the previous practices’ clips as a team to go through the points of emphasis and to recognize what is good and what needs improvement. Pictured is an individual stat/data sheet from a recent practice (names are blacked out). Stats that we record every day include: *Wins/Losses/Winning %: Every live drill is competitive and score is kept. We chart who wins and who loses. We order the stat sheet by winning percentage. *Field goals and 3PT made and attempted: Every shot that is attempted is recorded. Being a good shooter is not an opinion, it’s a mathematical equation based on makes and misses. If you want the green light in games then you must earn it in practice. *Effective field goal percentage (abbreviated eFG%) is a statistic that adjusts field goal percentage to account for the fact that three-point field goals count for three points while field goals only count for two points. The formula is (FG + 0.5 * 3P) / FGA. Free throw makes, attempts, and percentage: A few years ago we started lining up and shooting all free throws in practice on shooting fouls. This not only allows the free throw shooter to get a game rep feel but it also allows us to work on free throw box outs and rebounding. Points: Scoring is important. We track it. Scoring without a good eFG% is futile. Game volume is earned by proving you can score the ball in practice while being efficient. Offensive rebounding, defensive rebounding, total rebounds, and missed rebounds: Pat Riley said, “No rebounds, no rings.” We see who rebounds and who doesn’t every day in practice. This year we also started tracking “missed rebounds.” Nearly every offensive rebound means that someone, if not multiple people on defense, missed a rebound; we want to emphasize who is missing rebounds so we track it. Assists and turnovers: The pass that leads to the shot is important. The ratio in which playmakers create scores for their teammates vs. give the ball to the other team is vital. Steals and blocks: We value those who can force turnovers and protect the rim so we chart it. Paint touch: This is the number of times a player drives the ball into the paint. Slashing/driving guards make their money breaking down the defense. Paint allowed: This is the number of times a defender allows the ball to be driven into the paint. It’s tough to put anyone on the court in a game if they can’t keep the ball in front of them. Eye-ball: The number of times someone makes a shot over you (this indicates closeout spacing). Forced miss: The number of times someone attempts a shot over you and misses. Defensive lapse: If you get face-cut, give up middle (for us), gamble a passing lane and miss, etc., you get a D-lapse. —————— We feel practice is the most important thing when it comes to the on-court growth of our team and the individuals within it. We follow our seven staples of practice which helps our program continue to prioritize the most important thing.
