We recently shared news of the first of two local farms we are partnering with in 2025 to grow for our Local Barley series.
This morning we took a short drive to visit High Ranachan Farm, who sowed the Laureate variety on our behalf a couple of weeks ago.
We've been enjoying a lot of sunshine over the last month or so and had a few April showers in between, so the conditions so far have been very favourable which you can tell already from how well the crop has come on even in such a short space of time. We are all keeping our fingers crossed that it continues throughout the summer months.
High Ranachan Farm operates 'organically' so they do not have commercial fertilisers in their repetoire to keep the crop healthy and pest free. They rely heavily on mother nature to do her work and cattle manure from their own cows to fertilise. Field preparation is also important. Clover was growing in this particular field over the last four years in order to build up organic matter in the soil to sustain and feed the barley.

We’ve reached the halfway point in our Countdown Collection and can now reveal the latest edition to join this very special line up of whiskies from Springbank Distillery.
Aged for 30 years this 3rd edition is the oldest of our planned whiskies in the series and is a truly exceptional dram.
A marriage of three hogshead casks; one fresh bourbon, one refill bourbon and one refill sherry which have been nestled in our warehouses for the entirety of their maturation, destined to be part of this very special and significant collection.
There are notes of crisp, juicy red apple and peach on the nose opening up to reveal caramel aromas with time. Layered with leather, oaky and dunnage warehouse characteristics and concluding in a long smooth finish with lasting notes of sweet soft fudge.
Our aim is to extend the opportunity to obtain a bottle to as many Springbank drinkers around the world as possible so once again a ballot process will be employed and a free shipping and collection service will be available to all.
We’ll be sharing more information on this upcoming release, the ballot process, the Countdown Collection and how this is funding essential projects at the distillery over the coming weeks on our social channels but many of the details are also available now on our website. Link in bio.

This is Joey, he is one of our Malting Operators here at the distillery. Born in Charlestown, USA, Joey moved to the town aged 3. He started his career here in the bottling hall nearly 6 years ago and has learned a variety of roles in his time with the distillery including distilling and mashing. The opportunity to work and complete these different parts of the whisky making process is what he enjoys most about his job.
He says the main challenge in his role is how manual and labour intensive it is due to the traditional methods implemented at the distillery, but given that he has 3 young sons to run after and spends much of his down time in the gym lifting weights, we're pretty sure he must be taking it in his stride!

This is Joyce, one of our guides at the distillery. If you have every visited you may very well have met her. We asked her a few questions and she put it so eloquently we thought we'd let you just read it in her own words!
"I’m Scottish born, with itchy feet at 17, I headed off on a 25 year adventure, joining the military, meeting my husband, travelling and living abroad with our jobs, we finally settled in the west coast of Scotland, because I married a Tiree boy, and we both are drawn to the sea. It was time to slow down, So Campbeltown it is.
I found a seasonal job at Springbank Distillery in 2022 and by hook or by crook I’m still here. I’m a tour guide, some call us story tellers or historians, I think a little of each, I’ve worked in most departments at Springbank, on the distillery side, to see how they operate and process, it’s a great way of putting all the Springbank cogs together when you are learning. It's a fantastic role especially in the summer, when it’s super busy, I love working with people from all walks of life.
If you are here visiting Springbank, visit the distillery early before opening and listen for the malt men whistling. It echos through the car park. You need to be an early riser though !
When I’m not working, I’m busy working for a community charity who are in town, and when things are quiet and I get down time I love to spend it with my husband Innes and 3 dogs Frankie, Archie and Angus, we love heading north in our camper when we can."
Thanks for sharing Joyce.
