Taken at the Michigan Carbon Works factory in Rougeville, the pile of bison skulls in this photo was slated to be processed and used in making products like bone glue, fertilizer, bone ash, bone char, and bone charcoal. The number of bison skulls is a testament to the prevalence of the animal in the US, as well as why that number fell so significantly. As many as 30-50 million bison existed at the start of the 1800s. By the 1880s, that number was in the thousands and, in 1902, fewer than 100 bison were left. Conservation efforts revitalized the bison population during the 20th century. According to the US Fish & Wildlife Service, bison were no longer under threat of extinction (as of 2016) due to conservation efforts and commercial herds of roughly 500,000 bison. This is Arctic air that should be in the Arctic But warmer temperatures are adding energy to the polar vortex and pushing cold air further south and bringing warmth to Arctic This is not because global warming does not exist Its because it does

Well Done Colombia 🇨🇴. Colombia has approved the Empathy Law, a new initiative requiring schools to teach animal protection and welfare. Proposed by Senator Andrea Padilla and passed by Congress, the law seeks to instill compassion and respect for animals in children from an early age. All schools, both public and private, will include animal protection topics within existing educational programs such as environmental studies. Once signed by the President, the Ministry of Education will have six months to design the curriculum guidelines. Classes are expected to begin in the second half of 2026. The Empathy Law also promotes hands-on learning to help children understand animal care through direct experience, fostering empathy and social responsibility. This measure reflects Colombia’s growing commitment to animal welfare and environmental consciousness. Source: Padilla, A. (2024). Empathy Law: Integrating Animal Protection into Education. This is about how the last 4 years of my life has been dominated by banging on about a brick. But it’s really about a nation’s love of a 50 million year old bird on the brink because of us. They say you are what you love. I am made of feathers.

Govt suppressed this horrifying report last year, sneaking it out now while attention elsewhere, no doubt hoping to bury dire implications of likely ecosystem collapse. Ministers must urgently step up, change direction & restore vital life support systems theguardian.com/environment/20…

Colombia just approved the “Empathy Law” (Law 010 of 2024), a groundbreaking initiative that brings respect and care for animals and nature into schools, from preschool to secondary education. This isn’t about adding another subject to the curriculum. It’s about transforming the way students understand their relationship with the environment. From promoting responsible pet ownership to biodiversity conservation, empathy is now a core value across school learning. -Future generations will grow up with awareness of animal welfare and environmental stewardship. -Students will have opportunities for hands-on experience in animal welfare centers during their social service. -A national network of teachers will share resources, methodologies, and strategies for protecting animals. This law represents more than education, it’s a cultural shift. By teaching empathy from an early age, we nurture responsible, compassionate citizens who can make a tangible difference for animals, ecosystems, and communities.

Everyone talks about sustainability like it is a sacrifice. Sweden quietly treated it like a design problem. They opened a full shopping mall where nothing sold is new. Not as a protest. Not as a lecture. As a place people actually want to spend time. Bright interiors. Well curated spaces. Skilled repair shops. Designers turning old materials into desirable products. It feels modern because it is. What a great concept I hope this goes global

A stunning video of a Manta Ray gliding effortlessly through the water, trailed by a dazzling school of juvenile Golden Trevally fish. Juvenile Golden Trevally often form a symbiotic relationship with Manta Rays, using them as mobile shields from predators and a way to find food, creating stunning underwater scenes as the bright yellow fish escort the giant Rays, particularly around reefs like Ningaloo in Australia. This escort provides safety for the young Trevally, who stick with the Mantas until they grow large enough to be reef predators themselves.  🎦 Credit: Wonderful Nature.
