In an Indian supermarket in New Zealand, they used to have an Expired Goods Bin. Instead of throwing away food as per the law, they would put a $2 or $5 price tag on it. Having worked in a supermarket I know that all food items are perfectly safe to eat up to 3 weeks after the expiry date. But that doesn't mean you can keep them on the supermarket shelves. This particular Indian store was selling products that were 6-8 months old. Once in 2012, I picked up a jar of Bedekar's sweet lime pickle that seemed to have expired in 2011. The label was suspiciously crimped. But since I didn't have my glasses on me, I couldn't tell for sure. There was only one jar left so I took it to the reception and asked the checkout girl to see the date. She checked and said "2012." But I saw that while pretending to inspect the date, she crimped the label a little more. After I reached home I put on my glasses and when I pressed the label out, it clearly showed the product had expired a year ago. So I took it back and the girl said she'll do a refund. "But why did you lie to me," I asked. "And btw I saw you crimping the label with your nail in front of my eyes. That's not cool. You are operating in a foreign country. What if you did this to a Kiwi, Arab or Chinese customer? What would they think of Indians?" However, she doubled down and said, "You say it's expired but I don't think so. The year of manufacture is 2012." These are the moments when you wish you were wearing a body cam. I never went back to that store and a couple of years later the owner lost his franchise. It's due to such dishonest practices that Halidram's will never become a McDonald's.
