“Do not let this book come into the hand of any man who is an unbeliever and heretic. Behold, this is the seventh time I have commanded you, O my son Thaddaeus, concerning these mysteries. Do not reveal them to any impure man, but keep them safely.” - Saint Bartholomew

Do you feel equal pressure on all three tripod points? If you do not, you're likely moving on a dysfunctional foundation. Dr. Maddy Walkner explains how the heel drives the position of the feet and how she, as a podiatrist, goes about fixing it.

How can putting a heel lift in your shoe have such a dramatic effect on your body?

A Division-1 athlete could only lift 5lbs. with his hamstrings. From clinical experience, most chronic pain clients are remarkably weak in the muscles that matter most. Abs and Hamstrings So much of what we do involves getting each individual to strengthen these like crazy.

The brain decides whether or not the exercises work. Your CNS is constantly evaluating your environment trying to decide if it's safe or dangerous. Should it decide that it's dangerous, your body will enter "fight-or-flight" and effectively eliminate the possibility of you getting out of pain.

There are 4 systems of the body that contribute significantly to pain. 1. Posture & Breathing 2. Strength 3. Energy Production 4. Nervous System Control If you have chronic pain and you don't know where it came from, it's probably a collectively poor output from these four systems. If we simply improve each of them, your body will be working so well, that it's unlikely that you'll still be in pain.

People come in with these big stories around why their pain is different. It's almost always the same. Their body is in poor physical condition. Their posture is off. Their strength is low. And their metabolic conditioning is severely lacking. If we take each of the four systems of the body and improve them, we will eventually reach a point where your body is functioning so well, that pain is unlikely to live there.

"This makes me question every Physical Therapy clinic." - Pain is not necessarily a complicated game. It's often not. If someone is not a master of the basics, there are few reasons to try to correct pain with complex measures. If someone is not strong, well, get stronger. It just might be that simple.

Most people are experiencing chronic pain because they've let their body slip into mediocrity. Their diet is mediocre. Their workout routine is mediocre. Their sleep habits are mediocre. Professional athletes are the complete opposite. Our theory is that if you treat your body like a professional athlete does, it is unlikely that you will still be in pain.

Professional athletes that go through our diagnostic come out in the 99th percentile but the average person who comes in scores, on average, in the 34th percentile. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what's going on. Our mission is to build a body that is functioning at such a high level that the likelihood that you are still in pain is next to nothing. In 2015, I went to a conference at a small Physical Therapy clinic in Nebraska. During the first day, one of the speakers, an optometrist performed one of the most spectacular corrective exercises I had ever seen. The Sistine Chapel is littered with references to the Human Brain. The great Michelangelo, who had been dissecting human bodies since his teenage years, seemed to be trying to tell us something. Ever since I was in the second grade, I've had debilitating migraines. The only way I could get rid of them was by falling asleep or throwing up. No home remedy helped. No over the counter medication helped. No instructions from my doctors helped. It wasn't until 2015, in my first job with the Arizona Diamondbacks when I discovered that these migraines may not be permanent. Welcome to Medicine, Presented by Saint Bartholomew. We live in a world of quick fixes, surgery and pharmaceuticals, but it's our belief that you know what real medicine is. We believe you know what truly restores the body. True medicine is diet, sleep, exercise and nervous system control. I had been doing corrective exercises with my athletes for years trying to make the smallest changes in mobility. With a few lenses, I watched an optometrist completely restore a big, stiff farmer back to 100% flexibility. It was jaw-dropping. It was at that moment I realized that something was happening in the brain that was more powerful than my exercises. The medical treatment that an NBA player receives is entirely different than what the rest of the world has access to. It's an entirely different branch of medicine. The incetives are aligned and the only thing that matters is getting the athlete healthy and pain free as fast as possible. 2 out every 3 chronic pain clients are just in bad shape. They just need to be more fit. The challenge is that your definition of "fit" is far different than ours.

I never intended to help people with chronic pain. I was a basketball player who just wanted to work in sports. But when a co-worker wiped out a brutal migraine in a matter of minutes, there mission became clear. I had to figure this out.
