And that’s a wrap on St Magnus Festival 2024! Thank you to all the artists, audiences, funders and huge team of volunteers that made this year such a magical festival. We have loved sharing our events with you all and can’t wait to do it all again next year.

An amazing, ethereal concert tonight from @ErlandCooper tonight at @Saint_Magnus, and we particularly loved the celebration of George Mackay Brown for his centenary, written 100 years since the Orcadian poet’s birth. An unforgettable evening 💙

During a @stmagnus concert in @Saint_Magnus in Orkney, @ErlandCooper tells the audience of plans to compile the “ditties” he composes for family, friends and loved ones into a book and present it to Stromness primary school next year. (1/2)

For @ErlandCooper’s Scottish premiere of “Carve the runes then be content with silence”@stmagnus @Saint_Magnus in Orkney, the tape of composed, de-composed and re-composed music takes centre stage … with stains from the peat and rain of Binkie’s Brae, where it was planted.

The tape was found in 2023, and tonight it will be performed exactly as it sounds from the earth, with renowned violinst Freya Goldmark and the eminent Edinburgh Quartet. This will be Cooper’s first performance in Orkney and the Scottish premiere of the finished piece.

Originally from Stromness, Erland Cooper is widely known for burying the only existing copy of the master tape of his first classical album in Scotland, deleting all digital files and leaving only a treasure hunt of clues for anyone to seek it.
