No idea why you’d trust me. I’m just a guy who: - worked in pro sports - covered the biz of sports - exposed corporate fraud - busted bad politicians - has no financial interest in a new Rays stadium - will never get free luxury box tickets to a new stadium.

@mat_pagano That’s not how government budgets work. If tens of millions of dollars were simply an accounting error, furloughs and massive municipal disruptions would not be necessary.

@StadiumShadow Also, Dallas's 2026 budget is well over $5 billion. The money allocated to host World Cup games are an accounting error for Dallas. Your assertion is simply wrong.

@StadiumShadow The city of Dallas budgeted $47 million to host World Cup games. Almost all of that money was reimbursed by FEMA to pay for security upgrades . Any furloughs are not because of the World Cup.

“The City of Dallas is implementing mandatory unpaid furloughs for non-essential employees to tackle a $30 million budget shortfall. “The financial deficit is driven by soaring police and fire overtime costs…”

@ATL14ESQ @StadiumShadow @newballpark I disagree with that. The problem wasn't expanding into Florida it was letting the groups that owned the teams actually own the teams. The Marlins could have been a bit of a dynasty but their cheap ass ownership really fucked them.

Blistering editorial from Miami paper about the failed promises from MLB: “In a covered ballpark built solely for baseball & with a winning team, sales avg 12,735/game – 2/3 as many as in an open-air football stadium. The problem clearly wasn’t the stadium…

On the bright side, Miami-Dade County got out of paying $400m in Marlins stadium bills in 2009, when it didn't have the money; on the less bright side, it now must pay more than twice as much over the next two decades, when it still doesn't have the money. fieldofschemes.com/2026/07/08/244…

“The third promise was that in a ballpark for which it pays no rent the team would spend more to get better players. “The Mets this year top league payrolls at $328M, followed by Dodgers at $302M… “The Marlins, in contrast, pay $80 million, more only than Cleveland’s $79M.”

“A second promise was that a new stadium on the site of the defunct Orange Bowl…would rejuvenate Little Havana. “It hasn’t happened yet, 15 years later.”

@StadiumShadow @_j3r3my_T @JadaEWilliams Also, why do you only focus on the stadium? That is only one part of the overall project. I talk about the project, you only focus on the stadium. The new model of development with a stadium changes the calculus, especially in a tourist economy like Florida.

@mat_pagano @_j3r3my_T @JadaEWilliams If they built out $10B, it’d be a much stronger case for $2B in subsidies. However, if you get distracted by the top line number only, you are going to get bamboozled on the rest of the deal. It’s like the car salesman who knows how to get you a $600/mo “deal” on $80k car.

@StadiumShadow @_j3r3my_T @JadaEWilliams Just to clarify, did you not say earlier that IF the full $10 billion project was built out, you would be in favor of this plan, right? Because if that is the case, and we both agree a there should be a use agreement guaranteeing the development, then what are we arguing about?

@mat_pagano @_j3r3my_T @JadaEWilliams You are mostly correct here. Which is why you should care that your politicians choose not to talk to the people who are experts on accounting economic impact. Instead, they go to unqualified marketing people to produce economic impact reports, so they can game the results.

@_j3r3my_T @StadiumShadow @JadaEWilliams Entire industries are built around accounting economic impact. This is not a stadium alone project; it is a multi-billion-dollar entertainment complex, with a college and a stadium. This is a different model than a stand-alone stadium plan, which the anti-stadium crowd ignores.

@_j3r3my_T @StadiumShadow @JadaEWilliams Streets have been falling apart for decades, well before this was even a concept. Do you think that is this plan doesn't go through, the streets will magically be fixed? Perhaps the politicians are incompetent and that is who your ire should be with.

@mat_pagano @A_Katzman83 @Boomskie @ForbesSports Fact: Stu was never going to spend $600M on a new stadium in Tampa. I said this for a decade. Fact: Hillsborough never had enough $$ to convince Stu to move. Fact: Hillsborough politicians & sportstalk dudes were either lying or negligent when they misled you otherwise.

@A_Katzman83 @mat_pagano @Boomskie @ForbesSports He had it. He got $1B. He got all the approvals. They were moving forward. Unclear why he had a change of heart. But you’d have half a stadium in St. Pete right now, if a natural disaster had not gotten in the way.

@StadiumShadow @mat_pagano @Boomskie @ForbesSports Although it took awhile for him to get Pinellas to make that commitment which also wasn't enough for him. But I think also a miscalculation on his part was the timing, and creation of arbitrary deadlines. Also at the end of the day... not having a favorable governing body.

@A_Katzman83 @mat_pagano @Boomskie @ForbesSports He was trying to squeeze the county for more. The team thought they could build more public consensus around additional tax spending. They miscalculated. But they did succeed in getting Pinellas to spend more, which was a nice consolation prize at the time.

@mat_pagano Read the reporting more carefully. And trust economists who know more about this than you. Revenues were up everywhere in Florida that Jan, but less in Hillsborough than any neighboring county.

@StadiumShadow @JadaEWilliams 2) This wasn't all due to the CFP Title Game, but the week's event was part of the equation. That's all I'm saying; events here and events there, over 30 years, adds up and makes the investment in building the facility worth it.
