I’ll share one from my former office… and it was a clear case of quiet karma. We had two outstanding colleagues.... Gbenga and Akindele. Akindele was the solid, smart and quiet one. Always working, always delivering, no noise. Gbenga on the other hand was smart, but very strategic in a different way. Whenever Akindele handled a task well, Gbenga would find a way to attach himself to it. Add small input here and there, then present it like a joint effort… sometimes even take most of the credit. At first, it worked. Management started noticing Gbenga more. Praises came. Then promotion. Akindele? He was still working. Still quiet. A couple of months later… A major project came in. Big one. High pressure. Gbenga was put in charge based on his “results.” This time, no Akindele doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes. Deadlines started slipping by. Mistakes started showing. Pressure started to increase. That’s when management started looking deeper… and everything began to unravel. They realized most of the work Gbenga had been credited for wasn’t really his . Long story short: The project failed Trust was lost That same promotion? Reversed Akindele's consistency finally spoke for him. He was later given responsibility this time and the task was delivered in no time. That was when it clicked for everyone that gbenga was riding on Akindele's wing before now l. Lessons learnt; You can borrow someone else’s shine for a while… But one day, you’ll be asked to produce your own light.
