Nobody warns you that being poor is a full time job. Waiting for the bus because you can't afford petrol. Calling customer care and getting put on hold for the third time. Walking an extra block for the cheaper loaf of bread. Sitting on the phone with insurance arguing about a claim they don't want to pay. Poverty doesn't just take your money. It takes your whole day.

How does a country holding 60% of one of the world's hottest oil basins drill zero wells in four years? Namibia will tell you. Across the border, in the exact same Orange Basin, they've drilled over 20 wells since 2022, most of them striking oil. Some of those finds now rank among the biggest discoveries in Africa's history. South Africa holds the bigger share of that basin. And has nothing to show for it. Every time TotalEnergies or Shell wins environmental approval to explore, it ends up back in the Western Cape High Court. The Green Connection, Natural Justice and small fishing cooperatives keep filing challenges. One approval was cancelled in August 2025. Another verdict is still pending. I'm not saying scrap environmental review. I'm asking why the process takes years here while Namibia moves in months, using the same ocean, the same rock, the same play. South Africa isn't short on oil. It's short on the ability to get out of its own way.

The Orange Basin is a great example of how NGOs are holding SA back. I was shocked to find out that 60% of the Orange Basin (where Namibia found its oil) is in South Africa. The reason South Africa hasn't drilled for any oil is because NGOs are citing environmental impact
