In 29 years of writing features, I never once heard anyone use the terms "A Story" or "B Story" in a development meeting. Only in TV have I heard these terms. I think it was popularized by Blake Snyder. As a teacher, I can understand why he did it. But it can fool people. Outside of true ensembles, there really is no "B Story." There is only ONE story. Feature subplots support that story. They influence it. They affect it. They are necessary to push or pull the protagonist on their journey. If you do not understand why the subplot in your feature is essential for an emotionally satisfying ending, then there is a very good chance you should cut it.

Broadway's My Fair Lady starring Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews opened at the Mark Hellinger Theater 70 years ago today, on March 15, 1956. The show won six Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Actor. Did You Know? The play set a record for the longest run of any musical on Broadway up to that time and was followed by a hit London production which also starred Harrison and Andrews. Many revivals followed, and the 1964 film version (starring Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn) won 8 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. #otd

James Cagney as George M. Cohan | “Yankee Doodle Dandy” 1942 “The Yankee Doodle Boy” sung and danced by James Cagney, Joan Leslie (dubbed by Sally Sweetland) and Chorus. James Cagney became the first actor to win the Best Actor Academy Award for a musical performance. According to his biography the rather stiff-legged dancing style used by James Cagney in this movie is not his own. He copied George M. Cohan's style to make the film more accurate. Despite failing health, the real George M. Cohan acted briefly as a consultant on the film. He lived long enough to see the finished result and approved wholeheartedly of James Cagney's depiction of himself. “The Yankee Doodle Boy” aka “(I'm a) Yankee Doodle Dandy” Lyrics [JOHNNY] I'm the kid that's all the candy I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy I'm glad I am [FANS] So's Uncle Sam [JOHNNY] I'm a real live Yankee Doodle Made my name and fame and boodle Just like Mister Doodle did, by riding on a pony I love to listen to the Dixie strain “I long to see the girl I left behind me” And that ain't a josh She's a Yankee, by gosh [FANS] Oh, say can you see [JOHNNY] Anything about a Yankee that's a phony? [FANS] Little Johnny Jones, the jockey from the U.S.A [JOHNNY] Will ride the pony Yankee Doodle English Derby Day [FANS] Jonesy's broken records every track and every meet [JOHNNY] So Yankee Doodle's gonna be the boy they have to beat [FANS] Sportsmen of the British Isles who've followed his career Have offered Johnny anything to keep him over here [JOHNNY] But all the money in the Bank of England couldn't pay Enough to keep young Johnny Jones away from old Broadway [FANS] If you want to take a tip, the surest of sure things [JOHNNY] Have your houses mortgaged, hock your watches, pawn your rings [FANS] And put it all on Yankee Doodle, Johnny Jones is up! [JOHNNY] I'm gonna give America the English Derby Cup [FANS] He's gonna give America the English Derby Cup [JOHNNY] I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy A Yankee Doodle, do or die A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam Born on the Fourth of July I've got a Yankee Doodle sweetheart She's my Yankee Doodle joy Yankee Doodle came to London Just to ride the ponies I am the Yankee Doodle Boy [FANS] He’s a Yankee Doodle Dandy A Yankee Doodle do or die A real live nephew of his Uncle Sam Born on the Fourth of July He’s got a Yankee Doodle sweetheart She’s his Yankee Doodle joy Yankee Doodle came to London Just to ride the ponies He is the Yankee Doodle boy (dance break) Yankee Doodle came to London Just to ride the ponies He is the Yankee Doodle boy

Deborah Kerr as Anna Leonowens and Rex Thompson as Louis Leonowens performing “I Whistle a Happy Tune” in “The King and I” 1956. “I Whistle a Happy Tune” is a show tune from the 1951 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, “The King and I”. It is sung by the Governess Anna Leonowens (originally played on Broadway by Gertrude Lawrence) to her son Louis after the curtain rises on Act One of the musical, to persuade him not to be afraid as they arrive in Siam to serve the King. In the 1956 film version, it was sung by Marni Nixon (dubbing over Deborah Kerr) and Rex Thompson. “The King and I” 1956 was a critical and commercial success and was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won the following five Oscars : ― Best Actor | Yul Brynner Best Art Direction ― Color Art Direction | Lyle R. Wheeler and John DeCuir; Set Decoration | Walter M. Scott and Paul S. Fox Best Costume Design ― Color | Irene Sharaff Best Scoring of a Musical Picture | Alfred Newman and Ken Darby Best Sound Recording | Carlton W. Faulkner

@HGACinema One of the greatest film adaptations of a stage musical, and a great movie in every way (with a superb Rodgers and Hammerstein score). Yul Brynner, with his well-deserved Oscar for THE KING AND I, was one of very few stars ever to win Best Actor for a musical film.

Ann Miller in her favourite role! ― that of Lois Lane/“Bianca” dancing (and singing) the Cole Porter song “Too Darn Hot” in the 1953 MGM musical romantic comedy film, “Kiss Me Kate”. This film originally was shown in 3-D, so several moments are designed to show off that special effect. For example, in this “Too Darn Hot” number, Ann Miller dances with a fan between herself and the camera. This would have appeared to be the fan coming out of the screen. Likewise, when Miller flings her scarf during her audition dance number, it is thrown directly at the camera and would be seen by 3-D audiences as coming directly at them. Eight decades later, and it still feels like spring every time we hear it. 🌸 Written for Rodgers & Hammerstein's State Fair, “It Might as Well Be Spring” took home the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 18th Academy Awards on March 7, 1946. 🎵

"I Won't Grow Up" :) Peter Pan starring Mary Martin was broadcast live on NBC 71 years ago today, on March 7, 1955. It was a live broadcast of the 1954 Broadway musical and featured nearly all of the show's original cast. It was the first full-length Broadway production adapted for TV, attracting 65 million viewers, the highest ever up to that time for a single television program! #otd
