@turkmavisi @belafountas @HeraldOfRome No answer. Just childish memes. How old are you? Who is hurting is visible here. You spend all day commenting on a Greek history related post... Obsession borne out of an inferiority complex...

The new turkish narrative of framing every Greek city within their country as Roman (meaning non Greek) is as pathetic as it is ahistorical. The vast majority of these cities were founded prior to the Roman period, during Bronze Age, Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic times by GREEKS. For example Byzantium (later Constantinople) was founded in 657 BCE by the legendary Greek Byzas of Megara. The city was an important trade node controlling trade to and from the Black Sea and was controlled by the Athenian Maritime Empire during Classical times, while later by Hellenistic Kingdoms. Secondly, the term Roman by no means denotes non- Greek after one point. Greek culture was a main pillar of the civilization of the Roman Empire which is called GRECO-ROMAN by historians and the Greek language was the lingua franca and co-official language of the Empire. Greeks became Roman citizens (i.e. Romans) from fairly early on and after the split and demise of the Western Empire continued the Roman State and GREEK cultural traditions for over a thousand years through the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire. On the contrary for the most part of its history, the Ottoman state refrained from the use of the term turkish and turk, which was considered something of an insult to many... Sultans also claimed (falsely) they were Roman Emperors along with being Khalifs. The Ottoman language is a mix of primarily Persian and Arabic with only certain turkic elements that cannot be read or understood by modern turks. Yet turks have the audacity to question the Greek historical continuity and heritage...

Oh so now St. Helen was not a Greek?? Listen dude. I get you are so obsessed with Greeks. But this is during a period when the predecessors of the turks had NOTHING to do with this region since they were living in their tents in the central Asian steppes. Do you see any Greeks being obsesses by this period of turkish history? No, because we don't care and it is not important. But the thing is you try to find any supposed holes regarding, lineages, perceptions, languages etc. to Greek history, but have you applied your logic to the turkish one? Because by your standards turks have NOTHING to do with actual central Asian turks, not in genetics, culture and of course turkish language which is a Kemalist construct.

@RealHellenist The Mycenaeans adopted their writing system from the Minoans. You’re completely ignoring older scripts such as Sumerian, Akkadian and Egyptian. I really like Greece too, but that’s simply wrong.

@tedn385916 Yes. Ironic since most Roman cultural traits are strait up copied from Greek culture. As Roman poet Horace put it: Graecia capta ferum victorem cepit et artes intulit agresti Latio "Conquered Greece took captive her brutish conqueror and brought the arts to rustic Latium."

@Stavros_D_S Had a similar argument over 20 years ago while staying in a hostel in turkey. The girl i think she was Australian pulled the I studied classics card. I told her I would agree with her if going forward she was consistent and referred to athens as solely roman. She shut up.

Modern Greek is a Hellenic language with relatively few foreign loanwords (far fewer than turkish and most languages). It evolved directly from Byzantine Greek, in turn evolved from Hellenistic Koine Greek which was derived from the more ancient dialects (primarily Attic). Has Greek evolved through 4 millennia of continuous existence? Of course. Because it is a language continuously spoken by nobility, scholars but also peasants alike. It is not a revived language from scripture such as some other languages today. It was never dead and the fact it evolved organically is the greatest proof. All living languages evolve and undergo changes through time. See an example of medieval English. Modern speakers cannot understand it. Does it mean modern English are not English??? The consensus is that due to its very strong and continuous literary tradition, Greek has changed much less since Homeric times, than for example English did since medieval ones!!! A modern Greek can read and understand a lot of ancient Greek (depending on the era) and it is FAR easier to study and comprehend it since it is the direct ancestor of his/ hers spoken language.

@Stavros_D_S Modern Greeks can’t even understand the context of a sentence in ancient Greek. Yet this Balkan mix ”Hellenic” people think they are their culture continues the legacy of Aristoteles, Sparta, etc. Ottoman is just old Turkish with heavy use of Arabic and Persian words.

@Morningcoldrain @HellenicEchoes By showing art? this is not even the heavy shit. It's way more clear art that shows black people with full lips and wide noses. The erasure came when the Macedonians conquered and took the history for themselves and whitewashed greece.

No one disputes he was a Roman Emperor and spoke primarily Latin. After all he was still ruling the entire Roman Empire (Greek and Latin influenced). The later Eastern Roman (Byzantine) emperors on the other hand after Heraclius did not speak Latin at all. So were they Roman or not??? You can’t have it both ways. By the way you do know Constantine was half Greek through his mother Saint Helen.

Dude differences between southern Greek city states and tribal kingdoms existed. Some passages are over exaggerated. But the point remains. They were a Hellenic tribe and spoke a Greek dialect. Had Greek names and CALLED THEMSELVES HELLENES. Name on evidence they spoke a slavic dialect. Come on dude. Denying your Slavic (Bulgarian) heritage is so low...

Dude there are THOUSANDS of inscriptions found in Ancient Macedonia (coins, steles, tablets etc.). ALL written in a form of GREEK. Yes most written in Attic since this was considered the "proper" written form. After all this was simply a difference in dialect. Ancient Thracians also wrote in Attic a lot but we have findings of their language (written with the Greek Alphabet). There is NOT ONE inscription found in Macedonia that is NOT in GREEK... Even for Illyrians who did not write anything, we have several surviving words through others that denote a separate language. NOT for Macedonians though... Why would the Macedonians go to such lengths to ERASE EVERY TRACE of their supposed separate language???

@invest2_learn @HeraldOfRome Greeks don't belong to Anatolia while turks do... Putting aside Greek mass settling over the centuries. Have you ever seen the Phrygian language, which had become predominant since the early Iron Age? This is essentially a sister language to Greek

Please explain the meaning of these MACEDONIAN names without using Greek. All these names MEAN SOMETHING IN GREEK: Philip Alexander Parmenion Attalus Hephaestion Perdiccas Seleucus I Nicator Aristonous of Pella Arybbas Balacrus Demetrius Hephaestion Leonnatus Lysimachus Menes of Pella Pausanias of Orestis Philip's Peithon Peucestas Ptolemy Ptolemy Ptolemy I Soter Moreover can you read the ancient Macedonian GREEK dialect? Because a Greek schoolkid can. This is NOT Attic which they used for governance. This is their original mother dialect and it is also a Greek one...
