It’s a bit of a misconception to say “he was out because he didn’t slide.” In that play, the throw clearly arrived first and the catcher was already set to apply the tag. In situations like that, running straight through the plate is actually the fastest way to arrive — sliding usually slows you down because you have to decelerate before going into it.
