This year’s severe and early heating event, which has been experienced all along the Western Caribbean, continues to emphasize the importance and urgency of expanding coral restoration efforts to provide some hope that coral populations can persist.

“We currently have these larvae in culture and are working to ensure these offspring may survive even if their parents succumb over the next months of anticipated hot weather. I truly cannot imagine many corals on South Florida reefs surviving another two months of summer heat.”

In the Florida Keys, several past ocean heat waves have caused mass coral bleaching and mortality (most recently in 2014 and 2015). But they’ve never happened so early in the summer. This year’s event is much worse because of the timing. Thread 🧵

Can napping get any more idyllic??? I just discovered this @JMNeelyPhoto of two globe mallow bees (Diadasia diminuta) sleeping in a globe mallow flower, and I’m smitten.

So thrilled to see bighorn sheep (those tiny specks mid-ridge) along the Deschutes River this weekend. Extinct in Oregon by 1912, reintroduced in the 1950s, and holding on today.
