Match Report – Bemerton v Hythe & Dibden
League Game 2
After Saturday’s defeat, Hythe & Dibden travelled to Bemerton for their second league fixture, determined to respond positively. From the first whistle, Hythe were on the front foot, pressing high and putting the home side under sustained pressure.
The visitors created several chances, twice striking the woodwork and also hitting the post. The match was lively, with committed tackles flying in and the referee showing the occasional yellow card to maintain control. Hythe thought they had taken the lead when the ball found the back of the net, but the assistant referee’s flag was raised for offside — a decision later shown by video evidence to be incorrect.
At the other end, Hythe’s goalkeeper was largely a spectator, touching the ball only around five times during the first half. Despite their dominance, the breakthrough didn’t come.
Half-time: Bemerton 0–0 Hythe & Dibden
The second half began much like the first had ended, with Hythe pushing forward and Bemerton defending resolutely. As the game wore on, it became scrappier. Then came the turning point — a Bemerton player went down in the box after feeling a slight knock, and the referee pointed to the spot. The penalty was duly converted, putting the home side 1–0 up.
Both managers turned to their benches, with substitutions made on either side. The tempo remained high, tackles were keenly contested, and Hythe continued to press for an equaliser.
Their persistence paid off in dramatic fashion. In the dying moments, Hythe attacked down the right flank, the ball was whipped across the box, and Charlie was there to calmly slot it home.
The referee blew for full-time immediately afterwards.
Final score: Bemerton 1–1 Hythe & Dibden
A strong performance from Hythe, who will feel unlucky not to take all three points, but encouraged by the response and determination shown right to the final kick.
