‘My partner had attacked 20 other women' Clare's Law is a vital disclosure scheme that can save lives but urgently needs more national awareness ⬇️ The scheme allows a person to request information from the police about their partner's previous abusive or violent offending. Yet, many of the public are simply unaware that it exists. In England the average number of applications per 100,000 people for disclosures under Clare's Law is just 75. In the Cleveland Police force area it is 355 per 100,000 people, the highest in England and Wales. Danielle (not her real name) had been victim to two attacks by her ex-partner in her own home. She had "never heard of" Clare's Law, after a social worker told her about it. When police arrived a few days later she was "shocked" by what they told her, she says. Her partner had a record for violent assaults on 20 other women, she says. Abbie Bentley an IDVA from @EvaWomensAid in Redcar is not surprised. One of the first things they ask women who phone for help is if they have used Clare's Law. In most cases, they have not heard of it. That large swathes of the public are unaware that the scheme exists means police forces are grossly failing in their duty to help protect victims. The public have a right to know if their partner has an abusive history. Without this awareness, many are unknowingly falling prey to escalating patterns of violence, by serial perpetrators known to police, that could end with their murder. As we seen in countless cases before. Why are lessons not being learnt? Where is the urgency in creating this awareness? ℹ️ To make an application using Clare’s Law you need the person's full name, date of birth and address and can apply on your local police force's website or by ringing 101. Our recent research in NI identifies 5 barriers to #RSE: DV is a taboo topic; absence of DV teaching and learning; lack of teacher training & expertise on DV; religious influence; prioritisation of academic achievement over pupil wellbeing Read it here: doi.org/10.1002/berj.3…
Women's Aid@womensaid

75% of those surveyed have said they've received sex education at school, but 1/3 said that they didn't cover topics such as domestic abuse, healthy relationships and controlling behaviours. The curriculum must do better to educate our young people about abuse.

Here’s my research tip: If you’re in a senior role, support PhD students and early career academics as much as possible. Include them on publications. Invite them to be part of grants. Pay them to deliver guest lectures. We can all take steps to make academia more supportive and kind. #AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter
