The Scale and Your Progress
Let’s say last week you had a great week. You got all 4 workouts in. You hit your 10k steps daily. You stayed consistent with your nutrition. You did everything you needed to do.
Then on Monday morning you step on the scale and you see the same number you saw last week.
You are mad, frustrated….and feel like giving up.
But…. What if you actually lost 1 lb of fat, but you are just retaining 1 lb of water? Then that would mean you actually made progress…but it didn’t show on the scale.
Here are some reasons why you might be retaning water:
1️⃣You ate more carbs or sodium yesterday
2️⃣You are on your menstrual cycle (1-5lbs of water retention)
3️⃣You haven’t been sleeping well
4️⃣You are stressed
5️⃣You had a hard workout yesterday
6️⃣You had a cheat meal over the weekend
7️⃣ You haven’t pooped
8️⃣ You aren’t drinking enough water, so your body retains water to keep you alive.
Whenever I do my client checkins on Monday and I notice that my client’s photo is changing, but their weight is stable, I always have them do their weight again on Wednesday or Thursday, because I know they are just retaining some water and their weight will drop that week.
Don’t ever let the scale mess with your head. If you are looking leaner, and your clothes are fitting better, that means you’re losing body fat. The scale would have you think otherwise.
And remember, if you are consistently exercising and staying consistent with your nutrition, it’s only a matter of time before the changes happen.
Don’t let the scale define your progress, because progress can be measured in many ways.
Your weight on the scale is just a snapshot at that exact time. Your weight fluctuates hour by hour depending on your food intake, water intake, if you pooped (weight will be lower) if you didn’t poop (weight will be higher).
Stay consistent and follow the plan and you will win.
