Study of 3-6 yr olds compared effect of sedentary, structured indoor activities (like drawing, puzzles etc ) and active, unstructured outdoor free play on subsequent attention and inhibitory control in the classroom. Guess which worked better... sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

We are pleased to announce the return of our popular METACOGNITION AND SELF-REGULATION programme starting in April 2021. This programme looks at how we can help pupils think about their own learning more explicitly, by teaching them specific strategies. researchschool.org.uk/huntington/eve…

@RealGeoffBarton Agree, thank you for the memories. This is what teaching does shapes lives and makes memories. We often, too easily forget the impact we can have on future lives and aspirations.

@StephenJForeman Yes. I remember that evening. It was a performance of 'Macbeth' and even I - who had studied English as a degree - found myself confused by the story. Still, in truth, I feel happier to have attended a bad Shakespeare than not to have experienced it.

It's almost four years since I taught my last English lesson, and more than thirty since I taught my first one. So getting messages like this today, from a former pupil, is a reminder of the extraordinary, everlasting, life-enhancing privilege of being a teacher.

@RealGeoffBarton Remember your old 2cv car and trips to Wakefield theatre. One very unusual performance with everyone wearing masks and performing mime, seemed very strange at the time but still remember it now.

@StephenJForeman Hi, Stephen. I remember that, and hope you agree that - with hindsight - it was a character-forming experience! Lovely to hear from you all the years on. Best wishes from Mrs B (Miss Nettleton as she was then).
