Reality is that the 49ers shouldn’t have traded up in 2021. That was the value disaster that ended up also torpedoing the 2022 and 2023 drafts. They could’ve let Mac Jones come to them at #12, or — even better — Brock Purdy come to them at #262 a year later. Garoppolo was still playing good football and was under contract through 2022.
But they took the damaging swing, partly for cap management reasons, and had to survive it. Notice that SF’s aggressive trades since have been for proven players, not lottery tickets
