The @Telegraph piece I posted awakened memories. When disillusionment set in, many of us listened to nothing but reggae -- from ska to dub -- for many months, though I wasn't quite that strict with myself. I shall sign off with one of my favourite dub tracks......

....more about a do-it-yourself attitude towards the making of music -- an attempt to escape from the "suit"-controlled world parodied by Pink Floyd (of all bands!) in "Have a cigar".

Swastikas and the Sex Pistols in 1976: The year Britain turned punk telegraph.co.uk/books/non-fict… This article obliquely makes the important point that punk was NOT a musical genre. How could it be? How could, for instance, The Only Ones be part of the same genre as 999? It was....

A recent purchase -- "Vietnam" by Max Hastings -- is not untypical: cover price £30, but I paid £4.89 including delivery. And think of the trees you'll save!

Strange people! A sandwich is nothing but a fart, half an hour later, but a book can change your life forever. They should try World Of Books. They sell secondhand books, though in most cases one couldn't tell they were secondhand from their condition.
Philip Womack@WomackPhilip

It astonishes me, always, that people fume about the price of books. Most are the same price you'd pay for a sandwich and a coffee in an upmarket café chain. You can spend £12 on lunch, but balk at £12 for a book.

Jews are under threat because Britain is becoming a safe house for intolerance telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/05/2… And the people behind this intolerance have the nerve to call themselves "progressive".

Sign-off track coming up. Initially, I wasn't keen to see this man live, but Dave Mead persuaded me. Thanks, Dave. "Dead on arrival..... right where I stand......"

A 1924 Lancia Lambda. I not merely rode in it but drove it on the Isle of Man's twisty roads, which provided the opportunity to explore its handling. It was a very advanced design, both in terms of unitary construction and suspension design.

I never drove or fired 80151 but was a member of the team who restored her. I worked mainly on the valve gear. The Riddles 4MT 2-6-4Ts were great engines, based on a Stanier design. The BR Standards had wastefully short working lives: ten years in 80151's case, I believe.

Apart from riding on a few footplates the only "driving" I did was 80151 on the Bluebell. Reprimanded for too speedy an approach to Sheffield Park Station... I too am worried by X...

....something (Can't remember precisely what) happens which makes me fear I may lose "X" altogether. I curse machines I don't understand. Show me a Black Five with uneven valve events and I'd know exactly what to do. (I suspect that you would too, with your railway connections.)

Statue-toppling is all the rage, so how about the John Lennon one at Liverpool airport? It could be replaced by one of..... Let's see..... Robert Clive. That would cause a few school staffrooms to be filled with the aroma of smelling salts.
