Everyone interested in literature & learning needs to read Karen Edwards' "Learning and Loving in Paradise Lost," in Milton Studies 62.2 (2020). Today I read it for the 3rd time, & it sent shivers down my spine. It's so wise, so beautifully written. It's like a brain massage!

@GregJKrieg when I was a grad student at UVa, classes were called off after an overnight snow. By 9 am, the snow had melted, the sun had come out, and undergrads were playing frisbee on the Lawn.

been true for DECADES. we had a week of classes at college park canceled in 2003 for literally 2-3 inches.

@StephenMFallon Maybe the mountains of badness one feels obliged to sift through would quintuple without peer-review, but I'm not sure the experience of sifting would be that different. As it is, I basically never think, "oh, this was published in X or 'peer-reviewed' so it must be reliable!"

Seeing multiple humanities scholars announcing the publication of wonderful new articles today and noting how hard (and long!) they had to fight to get these valuable contributions through peer review, and I hope people realize that is an *indictment* of the peer-review process!

@jeffalanmiller I'll play devil's advocate. I see a value in peer review in keeping some flawed work from swelling the volume of essays and books one must plow through.

There is nothing humanities scholars should want peer-review to achieve (helping scholars turn their work into the best version *of itself* w/in a sensible timeframe, and avoiding the publication of flagrant inaccuracies) that can’t be done w/out it, as it historically has been!

Glad that "research productivity" isn't necessarily "the key," that is. That it relies on luck, privilege and connections is rubbish too.

I'm kind of glad because it's *really hard* to "be productive" if you need to work in a call centre / at all.

I don't want to start a pile-on of this person. But I do want to plead with tenured faculty to STOP LYING about "productivity" and meritocracy. "A successful post-PhD (academic) career" mostly depends on luck, privilege, and connections more than anything else. Period.
