NATO Aide Memoire: It’s not boring (at all) to toast a Britain that split its production capacity in half to play first fiddle to a newly minted @NATO. Such was our commitment to a US-led New World Order and Atlantic Alliance. Britain let go its global market lead, to re-arm (for a non-existent Empire, admittedly), with long years of sweating creaking assets. This enabled both Europe and a rules-based international order, before federal Europe went too far. Gramps, Sidney Charles Gibbs (2nd Suffolks), held up the German advance at Le Cateau (via Gough Barracks, Curragh Camp), shot and captured. Four years as PoW (possibly Hammelburg), returning home with TB of the spine, rehabilitation at Roehampton. Back on duty, every inch the professional soldier, albeit WWII Home Guard (c. ‘44), with my father (erstwhile Suffolks) on leave, about to depart for India with QRR, and mother (erstwhile ATS). 2nd pic: PoW registration, possibly Lechfeld, en route to Hammelburg? #WWI #BEF

Remembering Lt Col Brett, the Officers and Men of 2nd Battalion, The Suffolk Regiment, who fought as long and as hard as they could at Le Cateau, 111 years ago today. Many were killed or captured, and many of those were wounded. The II Corps Memorial stands there now. ‘Stabilis’
