Recently, Bill Belichick claimed that our new millionaires tax, the Fair Share Amendment, makes it harder for the Patriots to compete. What's been overlooked in the discourse is the fact that NFL Players don't pay all their state taxes in the state where their team is located — their state taxes are assessed and apportioned in each state where they compete. This season, Pats players will pay taxes in New Jersey, New York, California, Illinois, Ohio, and many other states. Several of these states, like NJ, NY, and Cali, have state taxes that are higher than the taxes in Massachusetts. What this means is this entire argument — put forward by Trump supporters, conservative media, and "Americans for Tax Reform," et al. — is way, way overblown. While it's true our new millionaires tax puts a 4% surcharge on annual income over $1 million, the fact is the actual overall impact on Patriots players and other Boston professional athletes is significantly less that that. Moreover, given the fact that most of us are obsessed, diehard sports fans around here, whatever slight impact there is from the Fair Share Amendment is probably offset by the incredible endorsement and media opportunities that our local athletes typically enjoy. #facts #TaxTheRich
