Expectations matter. If you are running a marathon and expect it to feel easy at mile 20 you are in for a rude awakening. If you expect it to feel awful you will be prepared to grind—perhaps on a good day you will even be pleasantly surprised. This is true for all hard things.

The vast majority of hard workouts should be about a 7 or 8 out of 10. Have another rep in the tank. Going to complete exhaustion looks great on Instagram. But it isn't best for your long term performance. Save the max efforts for race day.

What game are you playing? We all are playing a game. Are you seeking status, prestige, fame, fortune, or something else? Most of us end up playing other peoples games. We drift away from the joy, mastery, interest that drove us to a pursuit in the first place.

41 years ago today, finishing the inaugural ⁦@LondonMarathon⁩. The look of a man thinking “Never again!” But ⁦@chrisfinill⁩ has gone on to finish every one of them and, at age 63, may yet dip back under 3 hours again at this October’s race. A unique runner.

Nothing says toxic positivity like runfluencers telling us to “enjoy every step.” Running sucks sometimes. Training for a marathon without bad days is impossible. You’re allowed to not always love running- I’d argue it’s healthier than trying to be 100% happy 100% of the time.

How do you know if you are going easy enough for your endurance work? See if you can talk Easy running: Full on conversation without any struggle Steady: Speak in sentences/more of a texting style conversation Threshold: 2-3 short phrases

How you perform on your average days is much more important than how you perform on your best days. It's easy to be great when everything clicks. Much more important is being pretty good, no matter the circumstance or situation.
