Really pleased to see this out, great interdisciplinary work between @PhysicsatYork @WangYueC @BiologyatYork and clinicians from York hospital growing bacteria on photonic biosensors!

@ColmanOC @RebeccaJHall13 @hannahpugh All that paper shows is that Word is better for word processing, which make sense as Word is a word processing software and Latex is a typesetting language. The survey of user experience also shows that Latex users are much happier and less frustrated the Word users.

@dutchscientist @roscobacterium That's a separate issue to early career researchers spending years on temporary contracts. The lack of job security forces out many people, particularly those with caring responsibilities, with little discernible benefit as those who want to move are already free to do so.

I've made a list of pros and cons for staying in academia & objectively I can't see why anyone does it. I think it's easy for PIs who are now in secure positions to say it was worth it but how many fellow PhD students made those sacrifices and didn't end up in a senior position?

Why is @ONS using bar charts with upper and lower confidence limits for presenting Covid-19 information instead of violin plots with all the data points? It would show the spread of the data much more clearly.

@tomhfh I'm not sure there's any helping you if you think that testing your eyesight by taking your family for a drive is in any way normal.

I totally get the idea of doing a test drive on less major roads before galavanting down the A1. If there were a problem that's not where you'd want to be. The drive was very clearly part of returning to work as a key worker. Think the media has lost this one.

@tomhfh @BBCBreakfast Absolutely desperate whatabouttery. Cumming is clearly in the wrong and should resign. Exceptions were for 'clear risk to life'.

@WestminsterWAG @DickDelingpole Nothing complex about it. A person showing symptoms left their primary residence and drove 260 miles somewhere else against the rules of the lockdown. The deputy CMO said exceptions only for 'extreme risk to life', no evidence that was the case either.

@DickDelingpole Just trying to navigate the madness. Genuinely worried about the lack of profound or thoughtful analysis in the media (with exceptions) and the two-dimensional, black and white reporting of a hugely complex situation.

@Jacob_Rees_Mogg Many other parents who are just as concerned for their children have managed to obey the lockdown rules. Why should Cummings be any different? The man should take some responsibility and resign. The government's defence of him is hypocritical beyond measure.

@DominicRaab It is not politicising to call out a clear breach of the lockdown rules. Cummings should have isolated in his home along with his family for 14 days. The rules apply to everyone and it is a disgrace you are defending him breaking them.

It’s reasonable and fair to ask for an explanation on this. And it has been provided: two parents with Coronavirus, were anxiously taking care of their young child. Those now seeking to politicise it should take a long hard look in the mirror.

@michaelgove No one is saying that it is. Breaking the lockdown when symptomatic is. The rules were clear, Cummings is not above them, he should resign immediately.
