@CatHobbs Privatisation has been a total disaster, up to 1989 the nationalised model worked well but the services were often underfunded by thatcherite governments. Thery tried to flog off our water in 1984 and 1986 but public campaigning beat them back, in 1989 they sadly succeeded.

It's become apparent that the Renters Rights Bill, was more about getting rid of private Landlords than helping tenants Rents can only increase as Landlords sell up The response is 'more houses for others to buy' Was it just ideology and envy? @cristo_radio @MartinDaubney

“[Phillipson’s] policy of imposing VAT on private schools to pay for state teachers is having devastating results: Labour said 3k children would leave private school as a result; by last autumn 25k had & more will follow. Almost 120 schools are closing.” thetimes.com/comment/column…

@Steven1897001 @vickygrayson_ It costs 7k per year on average to educate a child in the state sector, more when you factor in the pupil premium and additional help. The private school parents are paying twice - for state school and private. How much do you think you should pay extra?

@vickygrayson_ @MrsLocke5 I dont mind paying much higher taxes for better education for poor working class kids, the VAT on school fees will help fund school places at the state sector

@Steven1897001 @MrsLocke5 Hang on, I thought you wanted to raise money? You basically don’t care if it costs us all? Wow.

@Steven1897001 @MrsLocke5 What money? Scotland just reported that the policy is going to cost the Scottish taxpayer? Too many children have already left so you aren’t getting what the government promised. Plus Keir said he’s spending the money on housing now. I just see cuts in funding. Right?
Keir Starmer@Keir_Starmer

In the budget last year, my government made the tough but fair decision to apply VAT to private schools. The Tories opposed it. Reform opposed it. Today, because of that choice, we have announced the largest investment in affordable housing in a generation.

@Steven1897001 @MrsLocke5 You seem to forget that private schools offer bursaries. There is no way for a poor kid to get into a top state school if they don’t live in the catchment. Physically impossible. You’ve just snipped away their option to go to private school.

@Steven1897001 @MrsLocke5 How does VAT help kids from poor backgrounds? They also don’t get the chances the rich kids in state schools get either.

@vickygrayson_ @MrsLocke5 My concern is for the kids from poor backgrounds, from the council estates who never get the chances the rich kids get from the private schools. Maybe you should stop ignoring the poor kids instead of protecting the rich

@Steven1897001 @MrsLocke5 I think you’ve just exposed how little you know about the sector. Fees start at £250 a month and 25% of private school parents are in the bottom half of the household income distribution. Maybe stop picking on kids calling them names. You are an adult after all.

@vickygrayson_ @MrsLocke5 Ah come on the vast majority of people who go to private schools are from rich parents who give their kids names like tarquin and Gemima. Poor kids from council estates wouldnt get a look in, anyone on a modest income would have to apply for bursaries with strict criteria

@Steven1897001 @MrsLocke5 How does making some people pay extra tax make schools fairer? Are state schools better? You’ve just successfully booted kids in the least affluent parts of the country out of private schools. Is everything fair now? The state sector isn’t even fair.

@MarkSeddon1962 Yeah Oliver was right, the labour GOV in 1977 sold off a small share in BP taking the state stake down to 51%, it was part of the agreement with the IMF for the loan. Tony Benn was forced into it as Energy secretary though he bitterly opposed it. Thatcher flogged the rest off.

@MrsLocke5 @vickygrayson_ No she hasent, VAT on private schools is about fairness, why should they be exempt from VAT. If Rich parents cant afford the fees which i dont believe then they should send Gemima, tarquin to the state schools

@Steven1897001 @TheGreenParty @ZackPolanski @AndyBurnhamGM What an odd thing. You want a service that doesn't make a profit because costs outweigh income, doesn't put money back into the system, costs more than what was there before, will have to have fare increases and/or council tax increases and may lead to route cuts?
