My first #EdithWharton! The world of New York society, and the pursuit of rich husbands. Lily Bart in particular has gambling debts to pay off. Much as I want to read more classics, I struggled to engage with our ‘heroine’. A chore and a bore #TheHouseOfMirth

There are more emotionally powerful nineteenth-century English novels — Wuthering Heights, Great Expectations, Persuasion, Tess — but for me Middlemarch is the most intelligent, its social and psychological depths simply unsurpassed. Witty too. I never tire of revisiting it.
