Shadow chancellor Mel Stride says "thanks to Labour’s mismanagement" the UK is "entering this latest energy crisis with the highest inflation in the G7
When one considers the response from Mel Stride, a degree of candour is required.
To attribute present conditions to “Labour’s mismanagement” is not merely selective, it is a distortion of recent economic history. When the Conservatives were in government, and when Mr Stride himself held senior office, food price inflation rose to around 19 per cent, placing severe and sustained pressure upon households across the country. By the time they left office, that figure had fallen to approximately 5.2 per cent, yet it remained elevated, and the damage to household finances had already been done.
It is therefore difficult to accept lectures on economic stewardship from those who presided over such conditions. The reality is that the present government inherited an economy weakened by years of austerity, compounded by the consequences of Brexit, and exposed to global shocks without sufficient resilience.
Against that backdrop, inflation holding at around 3 per cent does not indicate an economy in free fall. It reflects a gradual process of stabilisation. That progress may not be rapid, but it is movement in the right direction, and it stands in contrast to the volatility seen in the preceding years.
Challenges remain, particularly in relation to energy exposure and cost pressures. Yet the direction of travel is clear. The current position is not the product of sudden mismanagement, but the slow repair of an economy left in a fragile state.
What we are witnessing, therefore, is not economic collapse, but the early stages of recovery, however inconvenient that may be for those who would prefer a different narrative.

@ksorbs @SLTjustin So, why, pray tell why the Tories done zip about it during 14 years in office. All of a sudden it's an issue is it?
English

@SkySportsNews Ben White? He's finished, especially after yesterday's performance.

With Spurs looking very much like they are going down I feel sorry for @piersmorgan . He won't have anyone to poke fun at next season #coys

🏴 James Garner has made a combined 140 tackles (90) and interceptions (50) in the Premier League this season, more than any other player.
He's also now made 6 assists, no Everton player has more.
He's an old school box-to-box midfielder who can do it all.
Celebrating his England call-up in style.

@henrywinter Great players step up in the big games. None did, Rice totally overrated, ditto Saka.
English

Declan Rice consoled by Thomas Tuchel as he went up to collect his loser’s medal. Rice was the picture of frustration. Missed opportunity by Arsenal. They froze. Big names didn’t deliver. So many good players but just didn’t go for it. Inhibited almost. Failed to react tactically or with any real energy or defiance when City took control of midfield.
Arsenal must use that frustration as fuel to drive them to the trophy that matters most - the title. Head off on international break (initially a break for Rice), refresh, regroup and attack the rest of the season. So much talent. So much still to play for. Have to stay strong and go again. #AFC

@henrywinter Rice and Saka anonymous in a big game - totally overrated.

Totally deserved two-goal lead. Manchester City been dominating Arsenal, far more adventurous, far more inventive. Just better. Getting in the box, getting in the headers, exploiting Kepa’s poor handling for the first. O’Reilly scoring twice - getting forward from left-back. So athletic and swift across the grass, so aware of the potential of an attack and finding the optimum position to pounce. All in front of the watching Thomas Tuchel. Surely England’s starting left-back at the World Cup. #ARSMCI #CarabaoCupFinal

@Paddy_Boyland @TheAthleticFC It finally felt like home yesterday.

There was always a q mark around whether Everton would be able to replicate Goodison's hostility
But fuelled by passion & indignation, Saturday’s atmosphere rivalled anything the old ground served up
This was the moment it clicked at HDS

@cashleslie940 @TheTOFFEE_ Pointless - it's sold on the international market. It doesn't belong to us.

@PeterStefanovi2 Why is she a former deputy leader? She was as bad as the Tories. Hypocrisy writ large.

Labour's left unite behind 'major reset' call in fresh challenge to Starmer - warning party will "only survive if it chooses a different path" trib.al/l21vz20

@BenObeseJecty Quite a few Labour, but not many Tories. The reality is that the Reform backbenchers have outperformed the Tories.
English

@StevenR26299 Who are those who’ve made an impact in the house in your opinion Steven?
English

This week’s performance from Keir Starmer at #PMQs was a disgrace.
No attempt to be held to account.
No attempt to answer the questions on the appointment of Peter Mandelson.
No support from his ashen faced MPs behind him who looked embarrassed to be there.
Embarrassing.
